Plot: An gay teenage zombie falls in with a pretentious experimental filmmaker who casts him in a politically themed porno while documenting his experiences as a walking corpse in this existential gut-muncher from Canadian provocateur Bruce LaBruce. Adorable twink Otto (Jey Crisfar) was wandering the streets of Berlin and feasting on road-kill when avant-garde filmmaker Medea Yarn recruited him to appear in her latest film, a porno-political-zombie flick set during the gay zombie uprising. Gradually, over the course of shooting, Medea's interest in Otto grows and she decides to make a documentary about him. Flattered by the attention lavished upon him by both the filmmaker and his smitten fellow cast-members, Otto suddenly finds his life -- or death -- gaining a newfound sense of purpose. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Ok, everything in the world may not be as good as we would like it to be per se but things are atleast off to a good start with DVD release of Otto. Sadly, we don't see many films like this in the theatres at all & rarely come accross them on DVD so Otto is indeed a real treat. If this one film is any real indication of some great things to expect in 2009, we are going to have a phenomenal year. Fingers crossed!

I must've stumbled across this gem of a film by accident but am I ever glad that I did. Otto has not secured a place in my heart but also in my DVD collection. It's been a long time since one film managed to work so many of my emotions & leave me satisfied completely before the credits roll. I laughed, I cried, & even found myself gasping for breath at time due to the intense zombie sex scenes.

I've never seen a Bruce LaBruce film before just recently. Honestly, I'd never read any of his works but now he has my undivided attention & I'm seriously considering one of his films as my next purchase. There is something about his style which I simply can't place my finger on but let's just say the man is extremely innovative so we can expect greatness from him in the near future. We could probably list anywhere from 5-10 films which deserve to be placed on the same as Otto but why watch that many movies to get the deserved effects of one?

LaBruce obviously is quite talented as well when it comes to genre bending & doesn't mind taking the experimental approach here. He has something very deep to say underneath the artsy silliness & weird montages we experience in the 90 some odd minutes. Perhaps he is reminding us of the horrendous acts committed against homosexuals & the utter lack of disrespect humans have for anyone living or dead.

Nevertheless, Otto is a touching piece of art indeed & certainly one of the most provocative stories you're apt to see all year long. At any rate, we are more than blessed to have been granted access to this film in any medium. Grab yourself a copy today!

Very odd. But interesting.

I'm going to start off by saying that a gay zombie movie sounds amazing. But this is not really a gay zombie movie. Otto is a guy who thinks that he is a zombie in a world that hates zombies to the point of killing them in broad daylight. He has no memory of what happened before he bacame a "zombie" and auditions for a zombie film. While shooting the movie he has some sexual encounters with people but in his head he eats them. There's plenty of weird zombie sex going on and a story behind Otto.

*spoiler*
Otto got dumped by his boyfriend when he was sent to the psych ward for some psychological diseases. There's a list of them. Basically, Otto's crazy because his boyfriend left him after he was diagnosed.
*end of spoiling*

Otto is a story about finding love in a world of hate and discrimination. There is no hordes of undead trying to kill people, they just want sex.

Otto, or up with dead people

disappointing, to much junk and not enough flesh. this is not a good follow-up to his last film, Raspberry Reich. worth a 3 for all the hard work his actors did.

This New Post-Mortem Earth
Added 3/15/2009

It is amusing to follow a professional maturing of talented producer Bruce LaBruce from his early then mere scandalous male pornographic "No skin off my ass" via semi-doco "Hustler White"to this work reviewed.

Although both Berlin-linked and bearing strong political accents, "Otto" is unsurprisingly much less pornographic than "The Raspberry Reich", itself pointing at producer's professional growth to create and society's ability to "consume" a supernatural film about the resurrected same-gender attracted youth of, one could guess, the last century seventies, incapable to adapt to a past-mortem new Earth.

It is not a classic on any merit but rather a philosophic well-visualised tale peppered with tragic-comedian elements based substantially on psychotic fictions zombie thrillers present in general.

Two-in-one "Otto"'s movie-making storylines is not so explicitly interlinked as in recent "Creating the Wallpaper" and "Echobeach" M15+ stories-a sitcom and a movie of making the seashore soup Australian sitcom.

More than a typical zombie movie
Added 2/10/2009

When I saw that there was a "gay zombie movie" being shown at my local film festival, it sounded hilarious and I knew I wanted to see it. Zombie movies have always scared and intrigued me , and are usually silly and campy to boot. However, this movie delivered much more than mindless thrills and gore. It's hard to go into too much detail about why this movie is so incredible without spoiling the ending, but this movie has heartwrenching commentary on homophobia, mental illness, societal alienation and much more. Many issues are brought to the surface and there will be at least one that will strike a chord with viewers. Not to say this movie didn't have screamingly funny or gory moments - it delivered in that department, too. Something for everyone!
