Plot: His 13th birthday fast drawing near, an unsuspecting young boy on the verge of a remarkable transformation remains completely unaware that an ancient prophecy is set to be fulfilled with the rising of the red moon. To most folks, 12-year-old Timmy (Matthew Knight) would seem an average adolescent with a bright future on the horizon. In the tiny town of Huguenot, however, nothing is as it seems. As Timmy's health rapidly begins to take a turn for the worse, his concerned mother, Rachel (Rhona Mitra), does her best to care for the ailing young boy. Though his mother may not have a clue as to what fate is about to befall her frightened child, a group of specially appointed guardians who have been watching over Timmy since birth know the truth about the events that are beginning to unfold. Timmy is a half-blood, and when the red moon is full, the creature who once appeared to be a normal boy will finally gain the power to take control of his family's destiny. But until that fateful night, Timmy's life will be in constant danger by the renegade faction of lycanthropes who are willing to kill in order to maintain their vicious way of life. It won't be long until the red moon rises, but until that prophesied moment, the forces of light and the forces of darkness will clash in the ultimate battle for true supremacy. Jason X director James Isaac takes the helm for a frightening tale of fate and fantasy co-starring Elias Koteas, Jason Behr, and Kim Coates. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Still like Jason Behr

I have been a fan of Jason Behr since Dawson Creek. I own all the Roswells and most of his other movies. I wasn't sure about a movie where he is clearly the bad guy but, I took a chance and I wasn't disappointed. I liked the movie alot and the twist in the plot was great. It not as good as underworld by any means but, it probably didn't have as big a budget to work with. I wish it would have gone more into the background of the legend.

Could have been worse, but should have been better.

Skinwalkers / B000VSDNFA

*Spoilers*

I wanted to like "Skinwalkers", in the same vein that I like a lot of low-budget productions, but I just can't. It's not so much that there's anything wrong with it, so much as it's just so shallow and watered-down that it's hard to stay focused on the movie long enough to make it to the end.

The acting is fine, really - in fact, much better than I usually expect from a hastily thrown together B-movie. And it's nice to see the actress from Beowulf, who seems to specialize in iron-willed women who take horror movie events nicely in stride - something that most movies won't allow their heroines to do. And while the special effects are few and far between, and monstrously cheap when they do show up, I can accept that because god knows movies are expensive enough without having to try to make 'werewolves' look more like wolves and less like vampires with some extra body hair tagged on.

No, what really sinks "Skinwalkers" is not the B-movie acting, or the low special effects budget, or the cookie-cutter 'chosen one' plot. What sinks it is how incredibly slow and shallow it feels as the actors slog to the finish line. There are a few good moments here, such as the shoot-out in the town'o'werewolves (although the whole thing is somewhat marred by the fact that, though the townspeople prepared enough in advance to plant guns under every bench and doorstep, they apparently then failed to *practice* shooting them or even learn how to AIM), but for the most part the entire movie is based around a bunch of people standing around and talking incessantly about irrelevant topics. The overall effect is just so bland and uninteresting that it's hard to even get worked up enough to criticize it - it's not a BAD movie, it's just inexcusably DULL.

I could criticize it for the cookie-cutter plot, which is about as predictable at this point as the sun rising in the mornings, but it feels unfair to slam an obvious B-movie for overusing tropes like "the chosen kid", "the strong single mother", "the missing-presumed-dead father", and - most teeth-grindingly stupid - "the 'turned' ally". Really, this movie is so trite and shallow that it almost feels like a kids' movie, except that the violence will probably not be suitable for younger viewers. I'd strongly recommend giving this one a pass.

lackluster werewolf flick
Added 8/2/2009

Incoherence and stupidity are the hallmarks of "Skinwalkers," a cheapjack horror film about two packs of werewolves (one good, the other evil) who are hiding out in Middle America and doing battle over a young messiah figure who, it is prophesied, will bring an end to the curse on his 13th birthday. The problem is that the bad werewolves want to stay just as they are and, thus, are determined to find the boy and destroy him before he can effect the change.

What with its pistol-packing grandmas, its too-cool-for-school, sunglass-wearing, motorcycle-riding lycanthropes, its ludicrous gun battles, and its supremely amateurish writing and acting, "Skinwalkers" plays more like a parody of a zero-budget horror movie than the actual thing. Perhaps that explains why the movie provides far more laughs than thrills in the course of its running time.

INTERESTING PREMISE, BUT THIS FILM IS HORRIBLE!
Added 5/10/2009

There are so few good werewolf films out there and this story showed some promise, but lousy looking werewolves and a half-baked story kept me from enjoying this short and lackluster entry in the genre. I guess taste are subjective, but I know I couldn't sit through this again!
