Plot: Pedro Almodóvar directed this story of a woman and her circle of friends who find themselves suffering a variety of emotional crises. Manuela (Cecilia Roth) is a single mother who has raised her son, Esteban (Eloy Azorín), to adulthood on her own and has come to emotionally depend on him. One night, Manuela and Esteban take in a production of {+A Streetcar Named Desire}; after the show, Esteban is struck and killed by a passing motorist as he dashes into the street to get an autograph from Huma Rojo (Marisa Paredes), who played Blanche. Emotionally devastated, Manuela relocates to Barcelona in hopes of finding her ex-husband (and Esteban's father), who is now working as a female impersonator. Manuela becomes reacquainted with old friend La Agrado (Antonia San Juan), a transsexual, and is introduced to Sister Rosa (Penélope Cruz), a good-hearted nun who has to contend with her considerably more cynical mother (Rosa María Sardà). While looking for work, Manuela becomes acquainted with Huma Rojo. Huma, on the other hand, has troubles of her own, most involving her drug-addicted significant other, Nina (Candela Peña). Displaying Almodóvar's trademark visual style and a unusually strong sense of character-driven drama, Todo Sobre Mi Madre/All About My Mother received a highly anticipated theatrical run in Spain before winning the Best Director award at the {~1999 Cannes Film Festival}; in 2000, Almodóvar would receive the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Viva Pedro - a must have for Almodovar fans!

I'm so happy to have this superb collection including films I haven't seen before. They are all masterpieces from first to very recent. It's interesting to see Antonio Banderas in Law of Desire playing and looking like a 20 year old. I only wish there were some film notes in the boxed set. A great buy and definitely a collector's item.

Almodovar's Best Since Women on the Verge
Added 1/25/2010

All About My Mother (1999) has all the elements found in an Almodovar classic: a great ensemble cast of talented actresses, a brilliant soundtrack, an improbable plot and a great looking set. Like Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) it is basically a tragedy, but it plays like a comedy. The plot is not quite as zany as that of Women on the Verge, but Antonia San Juan as the transvestite Agrado adds the necessary humor just when things start to look bleak.
Almodovar makes an asset of an ensemble cast. We get to know each actress intimately as the camera lovingly spotlights her. No other film director has this rapport with female characters.

Beautiful, colorful film with a wonderful DVD transfer and featurettes

Rarely do you get the full treatment of foreign film to DVD. I equate this DVD release to the Criterion treatment since there are just tons of things included. This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film to Pedro Almodovar. He is a prolific director and his films just get better and better. This may be the reason why this DVD release has so many extras. First, the DVD has both the wide screen and full screen format on both sides. Also, you can select to have the film without dialog and just the soundtrack by Alberto Iglesias which is superb. I love the music to film chapters 6, 11, and 20. It has the kind of orchestral suites similar to Hitchcock suspense and drama. Vaguely reminded me of Hitchcock's Vertigo soundtrack with was eerie and lush in emotion. In addition, you also get the exclusive interview which reminded me on some aspects of the film which were interesting. Also, it makes for great film discussion on character development and relationships with other characters. The talent files are just as informative to give you some other films to look forward with these famous actresses and as well as director. Unfortunately, this DVD is no-longer-released and I managed to get this copy in the $3.99 bin from Blockbuster. The perfect place for these foreign film hidden treasures- don't rent well and end up in these pre-viewed bins. Best place to find no-longer-released DVD if you are looking for great foreign dramas without paying a fortune. I won't give away the plot since it's the most interesting as well as "screwball comedy" as Almodovar puts it in his interview. It is more of a drama with comedic moments that develop into something touching, colorful, and beautiful. Nothing like this sort of comedic drama and only Almodovar could do this sort of work.

A harsh realistic film in Spanish
Added 3/8/2009

Only in modern times can we have a Greek tragedy like effect with most of the people still alive? HIV and a transvestite father combine with a drug abusing daughter of an actress to produce an effect of loss
even when the baby doesn't have the disease.
I thought the lead actress was very good in this and it appears that a supporting role was enough to get Penelope Cruz to Hollywood?
I like it even with the harsh life it showed.
