Plot: A cop's personal code of justice begins to change after a number of incidents lead his city to a tragic wave of violence in this police drama. Eldon Perry (Kurt Russell) is a veteran cop with the LAPD's Special Investigations unit, a man who isn't above bending the law if it means putting people behind bars who deserve the treatment. As Los Angeles waits on the verdict in the Rodney King police beating trial, Perry is presenting testimony to Assistant Chief of Police Arthur Holland (Ving Rhames), who is well aware of the corruption in the SIS unit and wants to stop it. Perry, however, twists some facts as he speaks in the defense of his new partner, Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman), who is being investigated for inappropriate use of deadly force. For lack of honest testimony, Keough is let off the hook, and soon he and Perry have a new case to investigate -- a robbery at a liquor store than turned into a quadruple homicide. Perry and Keough quickly track down two likely suspects, Orchard (Kurupt) and Sidwell (Dash Mihok), but Perry is surprised when the head of SIS, Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson), tells him to let Orchard and Sidwell go, and instead points the finger at two ex-cons who should be taken off the street, even though they're innocent of this crime. Perry follows Van Meter's orders, despite Keough's misgivings, but in the wake of the L.A. riots, Perry has a change of heart, and decides to start working with Holland against Van Meter's corrupt methods. In the midst of it all, Perry is trying to hold together his troubled marriage to Sally (Lolita Davidovich), while Keough finds himself romancing a fellow officer, Beth (Michael Michele). Dark Blue was adapted from an original screenplay by noted crime novelist James Ellroy; originally set against the backdrop of the 1965 Watts riots, the story was later updated to 1992. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Not bad
Added 10/9/2009

This movie is yet another cop movie with the grizzled vetern (Kurt Russell) who will do whatever it takes to take down the bad guy saddled with new, younger, and more idealistic partner (Scott Speedman). Narc, Street Kings, and Training Day all come to mind as having similar vibes. Kurt Russell brings a certain likeability to his character though, and in these kinds of movies I always root for the cop who blows away the most bad guys. The standard conflict between the partners ensues, and things escalate to the almost predicable resolution. If it wasn't for Kurt Russell, this would only get 3 stars.

A truly dark cop movie with an awesome ending

This movie highlights the dark side of law enforcement. Kurt Russel think he is doing what needs to be done, to clean up the city, but does not have a clue as to right and wrong. A must watch movie.

The Bottom Line:

Awfully talky, Dark Blue probably features one or two speeches too many; it's a bit of a shame, considering the fine performances by Russell, Rhames, and Gleeson, but this Ellroy adaptation rarely rises above the mediocre.

Rather disturbing, but a great film

It is hard to believe that this film did so poorly at the box office. It was written, in part, by the writer of Training Day and is as good or better then that one. A powerhouse cast led by Kurt Russell who in this movie looks every bit of his then fifty two years. But for this role of a burnt out, street weary, corrupt cop, his haggard appearance is perfect. The gritty subject matter contrasts sharply with the beautiful cinimatography which manages to make L.A.s smoggy skies look inviting. The jazzy musical score is a winner also. Ving Rhames, who has also played his share of nice, and not so nice guys does great as the assisstant chief of police. The women in this film such as beatiful Michael Michele, Sexy Khandi Alexander of CSI Miami and the still gorgeous Lolita Davidovitch(as Russells long suffering wife) don't have a whole lot to do here. Mainly because the overwhelming machismo of the males dominates the story. These guys have a lot of smarts for the job they do, but not much sense for any thing else in their lives which, in part brings on the tragic results.

More like a telenovela than anything else.

Plays like a made for tv movie, or worse. The script is so obvious and prosaic. There's drugs, sex, violence, dumb dialogue. I thought I was watching the lifetime channel for men. When has Kurt made a good movie
anyways? The ending is decent and at least has a point, but damn, the first 100 minutes is like having your hair pulled out one strand at a time.
