Plot: Peter Tosh first rose to fame as a member of the Jamaican ska group The Wailers, alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Livingston (aka Bunny Wailer). Like Marley, in time Tosh became a major reggae star in his own right, but while Marley's espoused a utopian political philosophy, Tosh took a far more aggressive stance toward issues of political equality, economic justice, and rights for people of color . If Bob Marley was the Martin Luther King of reggae, Tosh was the genre's Malcolm X, and he made no small share of enemies before he died in a hail of bullets in 1987. Peter Tosh: Stepping Razor Red X is a documentary which traces this artist's rise to fame and the constant controversy which followed him throughout his career. Along with rare interview footage of Tosh, the film includes a number of little-seen live performances, including the songs Legalize It, You Can't Blame The Youth, Fools Die, Rastafari Is, and more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Peter Tosh, a mighty spiritual warrior of Jah.

"What as it was designed by Jah who sent me here to help to alleviate, to turn the filth and corruption that my people have been inoculated with it's only my duty to teach those who will learn."(SR)

Peter Tosh August, 1983 - "The flowers will bloom and the pollution will go away. There will be fresh air and no pestilence. Man has created these things for experimental purposes to promote death and advance technology. But soon the earth will tilt on its axis and begin to dance to the reggae beat to the accompaniment of earthquake. And who can resist the dance of the earthquake, mon?"

good reggae movie

this is a well-made film about the life of peter tosh. there are some excellent live clips, although, too many come from his u.s. tour in the early 80's and so there is some synthesizer overload going on. good interviews with rasta heavyweights; the interviews with mortimer planno and bongo israel are worth the price of the dvd. good reggae movie in general and definitely a good retrospective on the life of tosh. peter was a bit crazy, but there's no doubt that he was a man of righteousness and a truly excellent songwriter, and the film brings out those elements.

good retrospective on the Bush Doctor

Stepping Razor Red X is essential viewing for any reggae fan. While it jumps around chronologically, it is a good intro to Tosh, his music, and his beliefs. My only complaint is that I found some of the re-enactments to be a little hokey. I think that it would have been more effective to show still pictures of Tosh instead of having an actor lip-sync over Tosh's tape-recordings. Overall, though, this is a great movie about a true revolutionary.

Wailers fans/Peter Tosh fans should at least watch once

Greetings,
I have seen the documentary on VHS and have viewed it many times.
While the documentary could have been better directed, it's worthwhile for any Wailers fans and (sorry for the cliche) a must-have for Peter Tosh fans.
This documentary tells in clear terms that there's a great biography to be written about Tosh's life. Ultimately, the documentary is very moving and also very sad.
The strongest portions of the documentary center around the audio tapes Tosh was recording as a sort of autobiography. He even discusses his childhood, how he was singled out for his nappy hair texture and dark skin.
The documentary is also very haunting for those who know about Tosh's murder. Still, despite there being a verdict, the murder is still a large question mark.
Despite the sad, upsetting overall atmosphere, it still manages to be uplifting, hopefully motivating Tosh fans to see that they, too, can change the world, at least in part.
Tosh was abandoned as a child by his father and neglected by his mother, who didn't really raise him either.
Anyway, enough divulging of information, see this documentary if you can.
