Plot: Helene Hanff's book 84 Charing Cross Road had previously been a TV program and a stage play before it was converted into this 1986 film. The scene is New York, 1949: Anne Bancroft plays a struggling writer and passionate bibliophile, who answers an advertisement from a rare-volumes bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road in London. Thus begins a two-decade romance by correspondence between Bancroft and Briton Anthony Hopkins, the man in charge of the overseas department of Marks and Company. Though several meetings are arranged, Bancroft and Hopkins never come face to face thanks to mitigating circumstances. But Anne finally makes it to London, and finds that much has changed. 84 Charing Cross Road was produced by Mel Brooks, the husband of star Anne Bancroft. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This was a surprisingly good movie. Though basically the correspondence between a book lover and a book store's employees it was touching, funny and often heart warming. My wife loved it also. The performances by Anne Bancroft, Anthony Hopkins and Judy Dench, were excellent.

This is my absolute FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME. I buy copies and give it to friends. If you can get rid of the background noise in your life and sit back in quiet for an hour and watch this you will love it too. I was not a big history lover and for me this was also bringing the war to life.

Enjoyed the dvd,I am a fan of Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins, would watch just about anything in which they appeared. I will at some time purchase The Pumpkin Eater,a film from VERY long ago that impressed me then and I would like to view again. Hopefully the cost will come down a bit??JUdi Dench is another favorite of mine and is in so many things over the years,I watch the BBC shows on TV which she appears. I think I must go to London at some point,my Fathers birth place, maybe that is why I lean to the Brits.

84 Charing Cross Road is a beautiful film. A little art house but very satisfying . It tells the story of two people who fall in love over books buy never meet. The late Ann Bancroft is a delight and Anthony Hopkins is one of England's finest actors. My wife saw it on pay TV and raved about it so I had to get a copy from Amazon. We both treasure it.
