Plot: Damn the Defiant! is an 18th-century seafaring drama from director Lewis Gilbert. Alec Guinness plays the stern but compassionate captain of a British warship, engaged in the Napoleonic wars. Guinness is popular with his men, which is more than can be said for his new second-in-command Dirk Bogarde. When Guinness tries to modify Bogarde's sadistic adherence to discipline, Bogarde responds by mistreating Guinness' cabin-boy son, knowing that the captain cannot intervene under the edicts of British maritime law. During an incipient mutiny, Bogarde is accidently killed, and Guinness knows that the crewmen responsible must hang once they reach shore. But after these same men perform courageously in battle, Guinness suffers a crisis of conscience: How can he condemn these fearlessly patriotic men to death, as he knows he must? Based on the novel Mutiny by Frank Tilsley. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of the Best under-sail adventure movies ever made!

An excellent cast, an excellent story, the filming is breathtaking, and the adventure is riveting! This has to be one of the best, if not the best film of it's kind. Quite a few of these sailing ship/Napoleonic war movies were made in the early 1960's (Billy Budd, Mutiny on the Bounty for two), and this one. All had the common theme as I recall of the "freedom of man". Where did that thinking disappear to? Now it's the 'subservience to corporations". This movie rates as one of the two best - the other being Mutiny on the Bounty (Brando). They are different though - one at peace, this one at war. But the acting, storyline, cinematography and sheer adventure make this one a true favourite.

6 Sept 09 Sunday: This is one of Alex best movies. He shows his great acting talents to the very best!!!!!!!.. The plot is an excellent showing of the dangers of the abuse of power & the cat-of-nine tails, to open the back-bone. Dirk Borgart is the villian & he plays the part to the hilt!!!!!! It seems WAR never changes!!!! Thank you Amazon.com for your bargin $$$$$$$$ prices. A great British production. Best/Wishes Charles in So. California..

Interesting, yes. Fine performances. Good direction from Lewis Gilbert. However, pretty atrocious remastering. Full of aritifact and dust specks.

Alec Guinness gives a great performance as an humanitarian captain during a very interesting period of history. This 1962 movie shows undoubtedly a good achievement in visuals, even according to present standards, despite the deficiency (or absence) of FX.
