Plot: For his debut feature, John Hoffman wrote and directed this effects-heavy family film based on the story {-Dogs from Outer Space} by Zeke Richardson. Produced by Jim Henson Productions, Good Boy! presents the idea that dogs are actually an intelligent alien species sent to earth thousands of years ago to spy on humans in preparation for a full-scale invasion and takeover. But when the spies stop reporting back to the home planet, Canid 3942 (voiced by Matthew Broderick) is sent to earth to investigate. Once there, Canid 3942 encounters Owen Baker (Liam Aiken), a young boy who runs a dog-walking service. Owen befriends the space-dog, renaming him Hubble. When it becomes obvious that the dogs of earth have forgotten their mission, Hubble enlists the help of Owen to get them all into shape before The Great Dane arrives to inspect. If they fail, all of earth's dogs will be recalled to their home planet of Sirius. With Kevin Nealon and Molly Shannon as Owen's parents, Good Boy! also features the voice talents of Brittany Murphy, Carl Reiner, Megan Mullally, and Donald Faison. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

In my opinion, any movie with talking animals and Matthew Broderick is awesome. But with this movie, I have to rein in my excitement to see dogs talking to truly express what this movie is like to deliver a good review.

Well, there will be many readers who will eye this review with dislike, because you despise all talking-animal movies. Don't worry, I sympathize with you to an extent, because my dad is just like that. And with this movie, I actually kinda agree.

Owen Baker is a dog-loving teenager when he finally earns the responsibility of getting a dog from the pound with his house-decorating-for-a-job parents, and comes upon Hubble, a cute mutt who seems kinda mysterious to Owen. But one night when Owen follows the apparently-escaping Hubble, a confusing event occurs with a dog-radio and suddenly Owen's hearing got better, and his dog-walking just got more interesting; he can now understand what dogs say. It turns out that Hubble is from a dog-ship in outer space, here to see how dogs are doing with humans, as they have become lazy and pampered and their senses dulled, so the Greater Dane, leader of all dogs, threatens to take dogs away from humans forever. Now Owen, a boy who's never had a friend, and Hubble, a dog who's never needed one, must pair up and work together to impress the Greater Dane and keep dogs with their loving masters forever.

Look, if you establish and accept the fact that this is a movie with CG-mouths for "talking" dogs meant for kids with a slightly dull plot-line, then you can fully enjoy "Good Boy!" It's got good acting (the dog's acting is best :) ), a semi-enjoyable plot-line, cute dogs, some humor.

What more should a movie that will go down as a quiet classic for die-hard animal lovers need? Nothing, I assure you, and thought you should probably rent it before buying it and taking the risk of not liking it, go on ahead and buy it. If you regret it, you can write nasty comments in my comment box. ;)

Have a fun afternoon!

My four year old loves this movie. It has some potty humor. That is probably why he thinks it is so funny.
