Plot: Bill Murray teams up with his biggest co-star to date (with the exception of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man) in this family-oriented comedy. Jack Corcoran (Bill Murray) is a motivational speaker who makes his living advising others how to tie up the loose ends of their lives, but he has plenty of his own left dangling. Jack is emotionally at the mercy of his mother (Anita Gillette) and his fiancée Celeste (Maureen Mueller), while his booking agent Walter (Jeremy Piven) keeps promising him bigger and better things that don't materialize. Jack has grown up believing that his father died before he was born while trying to rescue a drowning child, but he learns that was not the case at all -- Dad spent a long career working as a circus clown, and died only a few weeks ago. However, Dad was kind enough to bequeath Jack a large stack of debts and his only tangible asset, an Indian elephant named Vera (Tia). Jack is in no position to keep a pachyderm at home, and he has two options for getting rid of the animal -- sell Vera to Terry (Linda Fiorentino), a mean spirited animal trainer, or donate her to Mo (Janeane Garofalo), a zoologist who hopes to return her to the wilds. Either way, Jack has to get Vera from the East Coast to California, and in order to make an important speaking engagement, he and the elephant have five days to cross the country. Larger Than Life also features Matthew McConaughey as an excitable truck driver; Keith David, Harve Presnell, and Pat Hingle also highlight the supporting cast. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Elephant Magic

I've seen this movie several times, and I never tire of it. Vera, the elephant, is magical. She trots after Bill Murray like a puppy. She waits patiently - while going on junk food benders. She cheerfully gives Murray a ride but can't resist a swim even if he is astride. But, she consistently devotes herself to his welfare by saving Murray from a junk yard dog and a maniac trucker. Her devotion even extends so far as to shade him from the desert sun. See it; you'll like it.

Good movie, bad format

For the content of the movie I give it four stars. However, this is a 4x3 cropped version. This appears to be the only format it is available in, so no blame to Amz.

Lesson #1: Never try to follow an animal act...
Added 1/23/2009

Unless you are Bill Murray! Clearly one of the most adaptable actors of his generation, this lovely film offers up a character at odds with himself, and you soon believe that he is the only one capable of pulling off the role. It's easy to see his predicaments, and the main one is large indeed. Vera should have gotten a "best supporting animal" award, and Murray has freely admitted that their on-screen relationship was wonderful. It shows.
Without going into all the encounters that Murray's character has to deal with, it is best to say that the most unforgettable person in this film is an uncredited Matthew McConaughey. That he appears to be on the wrong side of nervous paranoia is an understatement, and that the target of his rage is just one simple step ahead of him... One GIANT step! Fun for the whole family, it deserved more of an audience than it got. But money doesn't mean everything; this one's a very enjoyable gem that you won't soon forget.
