A bit forced
Added 11/11/2009

I think this game is, most likely due to the new developers, merely trying to "be" a Silent Hill game, in every way except for the music. Mr. Yamaoka is an excellent musician when it comes to the Silent Hill series, but this forced game isn't worth being a platform to deliver said music.

The way that Silent Hill symbols, such as the Seal of Metatron are thrown about with seemingly no regard to their symbolism (i.e., Alessa making a floating Seal, to dispel fire, somehow, for some reason, which is just stupid. It would be like Jesus making a cross symbol to scare away a dragon, just nonsense, really.) was most likely due to the new developers going "Oh, goody, we can place Silent Hill items anywhere we want, a-one here, a-one here, and a-one here...", because they have never worked on Silent Hill before, and thus can't know it so thoroughly as the original developing team/s. The game is abound with "creepy little girls", but "creepy little girls" have never really been creepy, just silly, and since when did Silent Hill use such canned "scare tactic" type spooks? Right here, that's when.

The levels are full of locked doors, as usual, but now it is pretty much just every door between the door you came in through, and the farthest door from you in the new hallway, because instead of the maps being deceptively confusing, springing locked doors on you when you least expected it, they are actually extremely linear. They just hope you will try every door you come across between those first and farthest doors, so you can see how many locked ones they threw in.

Sure, the new developers were "real" developers, but it was pretty much a bunch of Silent Hill fans who had (hopefully) played the original games being allowed to make their own game and put the title of Silent Hill on it, which ultimately gives it a stilted, "fan-made" feel.

I could do that, and you could do that, and they would both be terrible, because we don't make the Silent Hill games, Japan's Team Silent does!

In regards to the items, having TVs, Toasters, and Typewriters in your inventory is pretty silly. Even though characters in other games could have hundreds of pounds of items, if you sort of discounted weapons, the inventory items you carried around weren't overly large. Maybe James had big pockets, I don't know, but he never needed to carry around televisions in case he felt like throwing one.

Edit: I also wonder if even the music is not as it *could* be, if Mr. Yamaoka was given some real, quality Silent Hill material to work with, instead of "Hey, can you make us another song for another dark evil hospital? And after that, a dark foggy night, if you would be so kind."

Almost everything I said above can also apply to Silent Hill: Homecoming, but that game had some really amazing graphics in it's defense.

Survival horror.

I like this game because it stays true to the Silent Hill series. You can find some flaws if you want to, but at least the creators of this game have put out a faithful chapter in the series. There are puzzles and limited ammunition and strategy. It hasn't turned into a shooter like some other horror games. Kudos to the makers of Silent Hill, I say.

A generally traditional Silent Hill entry with some unique elements
Added 4/16/2009

Silent Hill fans should by now have adapted to the fact that there are now various chefs cooking up new titles for the franchise. The first title to show the benefits of this diversity was Silent Hill Origins. Molded in general gameplay style around the traditional 3rd-person survival-horror adventure format, it also introduced some changes to the formula.

Firstly, the game manages to carry over the expected visual sophistication of the series to the PSP system. Only the less exquisitely detailed faces of in-game characters indicate a change in design priorities for the new title.

The game also controls very well in the classic Silent Hill mold of exploration interspersed with deliberately paced moments of combat. Origins adds in a near-universal system of weapon durability (the unique Silent Hill 4 introduced specific weapons that could break), as well as a great host of items about the environment to repurpose as weapons or even to throw at enemies. Not all is perfect here, however, as the attempted balance between breakable weapons and new weapon availability breaks down as one's inventory overflows with dozens of sticks, bars, and even multiple small TVs. Durability becomes less of an issue, replaced by awkward inventory management.

Another change is to the replayability and ranking systems of the game. Replacing the "10-star" ranking of older SH titles is a new set of challenges to meet (similar to Xbox 360 achievements). Each one in turn rewards a significant new unlockable, including weapons and several optional costumes for main character Travis.

Which brings us to the all-important "fun factor". Silent Hill Origins is not only a competent SH entry built natively around the PSP, but is also surprising fun to replay. After a challenging first playthrough, subsequent plays can be accomplished quite quickly and the unlockable weapons and different endings are worth the trouble to earn.

Just when I was about to give up on PSP.
Added 4/6/2009

Finally a game that's worthy of gaming time. I just returned GOD of War which SUCKED and I was thinking GTA and Tom Clancy stuff are the only ok games on PSP when I saw this on sale for $9.99 at Gamestop. I periodically check for upcoming Resident Evils for PSP which aren't coming yet. This game takes me back to the old school style Resident Evils that I loved. I've barely started and all I can think is GREAT GAME.
