Plot: Oliver Stone directed this John Ridley screenplay adapted from Ridley's novel Stray Dogs. A drifter (Sean Penn) eludes Las Vegas collection agents and arrives in a small town where he decides to linger after his car has a breakdown. Here he gets involved with the locals, including an unhappily married couple -- a businessman (Nick Nolte) and his seductive, femme-fatale wife (Jennifer Lopez). A trailer trash teen (Claire Danes) also approaches him in an effort to get away from her abusive boyfriend (Joaquin Phoenix). Tensions in the town escalate, eventually leading to murder. Stone wanted to change the title from U-Turn back to Stray Dogs but encountered a problem with Akira Kurosawa, who felt it was too similar to his detective classic, Stray Dog (1949) with Toshiro Mifune. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Jennifer Lopez gets drilled
Added 7/13/2009

This is probably one of the biggest all star casts of all time. But who really cares?? The best thing about this film, is that Jennifer Lopez get banged from behind by Nick Nolte in a reasonably graphic sex scene. It's absolutely awesome. Nick Nolte takes her from behind and just drills her and the pained expression on Lopez's face is just such a turn on.

I dont have a stop time for this great moment in cinematic history, but just watch the film for this 30 seconds of sheer brilliance. I know actors always say that they dont get turned on by the scenes, as they are "just acting", but Nick Nolte must have LOVED bending over Lopez and just banging her naked body senseless....watching her back ripple every time he slammed into her...looking at her clean shaven snatch glistening in front of him....Lopez is so hot in this film and she looks about 25 in it. Great great viewing. A must watch scene and its worth watching the whole film, JUST for this moment. I now await Britney Spears to get involved in film, with the hope that Nick Nolte (probably now in his 70's, but still a sexual Tyrannasaurus) pummles Spears into an oblivion too.

Hope that helps.

The Bottom Line:

Something of a cross between Scorsese's After Hours and the neo-noirs of John Dahl, U-Turn won't win originality points but the performances are good, the characters sufficiently amoral, and the femmes sufficiently fatale to make this an enjoyable 2 hour trip down a dark noir hightway.

An overlooked Oliver Stone film with a twisted plot and first-rate cast
Added 4/29/2007

Oliver Stone's U Turn is a small town Arizona story with love crosses and plot twists galore. A drifter (Sean Penn) breaks down in the Arizona back-woods and gets entangled with a spitfire (Jennifer Lopez) who wants to leave her twisted, abusive husband (Nick Nolte). The husband, on the other hand, wants his wife murdered. The town mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton) is a greasy local who dislikes city slicker outsiders and doesn't aim to make Penn's character's life any easier. Our hero also gets mixed up with a cute local waitress (Claire Danes) seeking refuge from her abusive boyfriend (Joaquin Phoenix).

The movie is a day-in-the-life-of look at a strange little desert town with hidden undercurrents and long-standing family secrets. With an all-star cast and plot upheavals galore, the viewing is a full-on thrill-ride. Highly recommended. Also check out Clay Pigeons.
