Plot: Echoing the themes of Living in Oblivion and Irma Vep, David Mamet's seventh feature centers on the havoc wrought on the inhabitants of a small town by a troubled film production. After its leading man's propensity for teenage girls gets them banished from their New Hampshire location, a film crew relocates to the small town of Waterford, VT, to finish shooting The Old Mill. As its title suggests, the film depends on the presence of a genuine mill, something the town is reported to possess. Unfortunately, with only days before principal photography begins, it becomes apparent that the mill in fact burned down decades ago. Unfazed, the film's director, Walt Price (William H. Macy), places his faith in the ability of first-time screenwriter Joseph Turner White (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to alter the script; what he doesn't count on is White's apparently bottomless reserve of angst-fueled writer's block. The film's leading lady (Sarah Jessica Parker) refuses to do her contracted nude scene unless she's give an ungodly sum of cash, while a foreign cinematographer offends the locals by messing with an historic firehouse, and the leading man, Bob Barrenger (Alec Baldwin), dallies with Carla (Julia Stiles), a crafty local teen. Everything comes to a head after Barrenger and Carla are injured in a car accident, which leads White to another emotional quandary and into the arms of Ann Black (Rebecca Pidgeon). ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Great Movie, how did I miss this
Added 7/20/2009

I had never seen this movie before. I picked it up in my local resale shop in a small town, like the town in the movie. Our town could be the town in the movie. We are close to Austin and I can imagine this going on in our town. This movie is a good combination of dark, nasty sarcasm and good story. The purity angle is wonderfully done with the writer (Hoffman) and the bookstore owner. The ensemble cast really did a good job. Impressive. How did I miss it?

Fun Ensemble Movie
Added 6/9/2009

State and Main is a fun ensemble movie. The film stars William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Stiles, David Paymer, Alec Baldwin, and a host of others. Rebecca Pidgeon's underplayed portrayal came across as especially likeable. (Some say Alec Baldwin is a leading man, but his recent roles seem to be as a supporting actor or someone who plays the role of a leading man--Notting Hill (Collector's Edition) comes to mind .)

The vehicle for the story is a film crew that invades a small Vermont town and disrupts the peaceful lives of the villagers. The theme is second chances, both in the film within the film and State and Main. Everybody deserves a second chance, except for the Alec Baldwin character. As a serial statutory rapist, the slimy character had already used up too many chances. A crooked politician didn't excuse his predatory behavior, and he should have done jail time.

Witty dialogue and fine acting make for an enjoyable film. If you're enamored with the film industry, you'll probably find State and Main especially appealing.

What really takes place while filming a movie.
Added 5/31/2009

At Slcc my professor who has been in at least a couple of movies said this is really what goes on while making a movie. The star studded cast make this a must own. Everyone is so in tune with making a movie or sometimes just themselves. Though the movie seemed a little over the top, i'm sure it's still very simular to what goes on behind the scenes. William h. macy, and alec baldwin do a great job of acting in this movie, as well as the rest of the cast.

Smart and Entertaining. A delightful surprise, especially after I thought I was settling for a so-so movie.

Mamet Sparkles

"That's absurd."
"So is our electoral system, but we still vote."

Few people can cut through the nonsense with as much wit as David Mamet, and in State and Main, the writer/director puts his talents to great use. The movie shows us the insides of filmmaking, a view that manages to be both ugly and hilarious. The cast, for the most part, is great, particularly William H. Macy and Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you're looking for vintage Mamet, you can't go wrong with State and Main.
