Plot: A male prostitute who has dismissed the need for love in his life learns a lesson about affection from one of his customers in this independent comedy drama from filmmaker Q. Allan Brocka. X (Derek Magyar) is a gay hustler whose enigmatic name reflects his emotional distance from the world around him; he doesn't much believe in love, and isn't interested in sex unless he's being paid for it. X has a dozen regular customers he calls his disciples, and shares his home with two roommates -- Andrew (Darryl Stephens), whose good looks sometimes tempt X, though he's still uncertain about his own sexual feelings, and Joey (Jonathon Trent), an uninhibited and outré teenager who openly lusts after X, to no avail. Gregory (Patrick Bauchau) is an older man who regularly hires X for companionship, but he refuses to have sex with the hustler until he's willing to acknowledge that their attraction is mutual. X isn't about to admit to any such thing, but one day Gregory shares a story with X that forces him to reconsider his thinking. Boy Culture received its North American premiere at the {~2006 Tribeca Film Festival}. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Awesome Movie
Added 9/13/2009

I really liked this movie. The actors are hot, and the story goes beyond your typical coming of age story that fills the plot of most modern gay movies. I read the book before I watched the movie, and even though the book was better (as it typically is), this movie did the book justice. The main character, X, was very similar to how he was portrayed in the book. The only thing I wish there was more of with this movie is shirtless, hot sex scenes :)

I thought this was a wonderful film - great story great cast. One of the best gay films I have watched in a very long time.

I had the honor of being able to interview the director Q. Allan Brocka and Jonathon Trent for my podcast Ramble Redhead. It was great getting to know more about this great film and it is a great addition to anyone library collection.

This movie is simply amazing. I laughed the entire time. I cried. I yelled at the tv. I loved it. Not your everyday gay movie. THe story line goes beyond that. This is a movie about love, trust, guilt, giulty pleasures, and oppertunities.

This is close to "Evian"
Added 11/9/2008

A magazine columnist once wrote in a movie review for "Waiting to Exhale" that when you're dying of thirst, you don't exactly need Evian. This is how I've felt about the vast majority of gay-themed movies. Most of them, to be blunt, are crap. Supply and demand dictates that, due to the relatively few writers and directors working in this genre, that most gay-themed movies are disappointing and would never be green-lit if their audience was more mainstream, i.e., straight.

"Boy Culture", despite its generic title, is a refreshing exception to this rule. Warm, touching, sexy, and smart, this movie is a good example of gay independent movie making. The voice-over of the main character may be a bit cheap, but it's quite effective in the end. The leads are all extremely watchable, attractive, and endearing. I don't know which one of them was gay or straight, but I neither did I care. Each of them inhabited their roles without resulting to trite stereotypes, or, as insulting to me, personally, the opposite -- playing "straight". The result was that I felt that each character was a real person.

While I do not think it will appeal to the majority of straight audiences, it is simply a Must-Watch for us gays. And straight viewers with an open mind and a romantic sensibility will certainly not be disappointed.
