Plot: A rather mundane effort for the usually fast-paced Mascot Pictures, this 12-chapter action serial featured Rex, billed as a Wild Stallion, and the redoubtable Rin Tin Tin Jr.. Rinty's offspring was not in his famous father's league and his teaming here with Rex and Bob Custer, a wooden and increasingly stout silent Western star, did not earn him many new admirers. The two animal stars are pals attempting to save their owner, Bob Sheldon (Custer), from a murder rap. Falsely accused of killing Lou Salter (Dick Alexander), rancher Sheldon is arrested by the sheriff (Jack Rockwell). His accuser, Frank Nolan (Richard Cramer), then steals the condemned man's handsome stallion, Rex, whom he expects to ride in the Big Race. With the help of Rinty, lovely Alice Ingram (Lucile Browne) and her sidekick, Henry (Ben Turpin), manage to locate Rex in a barn. In order to raise money for Sheldon's defense, Alice enters the race on Rex and wins. Rinty and Custer both fell on hard times following The Law of the Wild but were briefly resurrected by Poverty Row company Reliable for a rather shoddy B-Western effort entitled The Vengeance of Rannah (1936). ~ Hans J. Don't blame Zane Grey for this!
Added 1/7/2003

Other than the great western author's name posted with the description of this video, I find no evidence that he had anything to do with it. I've watched the serial a couple of times and Zane Grey is nowhere given credit, nor is the title listed in any Zane Grey bibliography I've found.

Be that as it may, this is a quite uninteresting western serial from Mascot. The best acting comes from Rin Tin Tin and from Rex, the Wonder Horse, but they don't have enough to do to save it. Even classic silent comedian, Ben Turpin with his crossed eyes, does little to help.

Rex is kidnapped, or horsenapped, from the hero. The hero goes to get his horse back, and discovers the kidnapper murdered in the horse's stall. He spends most of the 12 chapters eluding the law and trying to prove that Rex is his horse and to clear his name. You're not told who the actual murderer is until the final chapter, and the revelation doesn't warrant any more than a shrug of the shoulders.

Not recommended unless you have every other serial available on video and think you have to have this one.

Mascot serial starring Rex the Horse and Rin Tin Tin, Jr.
Added 7/22/2000

Although Rex and Rin Tin Tin, Jr., are giving the star billing in this 1934 Poverty Row serial, former silent star Bob Custer turns in a creditable performance as a ranch owner whose beautiful stallion Rex is stolen by former ranch hands who intend to race him. Rin Tin Tin, Jr. and Bob track down the culprits and recover Rex. This was Custer's return to movies after a hiatus of several years.
