Plot: In the years before the Hamptons became the ultimate Long Island destination, two generations of clam diggers work the land and struggle to make sense of the changes that threaten to forever transform their simple way of life. The year is 1976, and the future Long Island vacationing hotspot is little more than a tight-knit community of hard-living folks who make their living from the sea. While the impending presidential race between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter has the entire country swept up in the wind of change, the local Hamptons clam diggers begin waging a losing battle against the wealthy developers who are gradually encroaching on their waters. Hunt (Paul Rudd) is a restless and imaginative digger who comes from a long line of hardworking seafarers and has a keen eye for black-and-white photography. When Hunt's father suddenly dies, Hunt and his lifelong pals Frankie (Ken Marino), Jack (Ron Eldard), and Cons (Josh Hamilton) slowly begin to take stock of their modest lives. Meanwhile, as Hunt's recently divorced older sister, Gina (Maura Tierney), struggles to get by while working as a waitress at a local diner, Hunt himself enters into a playfully flirtatious relationship with vacationing Manhattanite Zoe (Lauren Ambrose). Constantly questioning why Hunt refuses to venture out of his dead-end town in favor of pursuing his artistic talents in the big city, Zoe serves as a persistent reminder that one is not always necessarily bound by his or her roots. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Diggers is a great "feel good" movie. The cast is top notch. It takes you back to simpler times when smoking grass, drinking and eating pills and money problems were all you had to worry about. Hey?! That's just like present day! Superior writting. Buy it!

Amiable ensemble cast indie

Supposedly set in 1976, this art house film borrows from movies like "Diner" to bring a group of male and female friends together as they hash out issues of young adulthood such as death, birth, money and the meaning of life. There's really precious little that evokes 1976 besides some TV clips of Jimmy Carter and Jerry Ford, and a few Bicentennial references that anyone under 30 won't get. Still, this is a pleasant film with a few mild laughs, almost no violence and some people you will at least not despise after 90 minutes. Lost opportunity for a much better soundtrack, but I guess that would have cost more money in licensing fees.

Late 70's and clams on Long Island are going private.
Our hero's Dad dies and it isn't a bad idea to get numb? The times they are a changing for a group
of Long Island clam diggers.
Sorry about that...
all things end.

I thought this was a well scripted well acted film. Set in the mid 70's, which bought back memories, Ken Marino not only done a great job writing the film but he was excellent acting in it as well. His character was my favourite. Working hard to put food on the table for his family, the only one of the four friends who is married and has 5 kids and a 6th on the way. Good humour in places. Paul Rudd was great as the lonely 30 something held back in this small town by family. Ron Eldard played the womaniser very well with his boyish good looks. Josh Hamilton added alot of the humour with his pot smoking hippy character typical of the times. All in all a great film, I would recommend watching to anyone.

This is another one of those movies that straddles the line between comedy and poignance. This is an excellent movie with an awesome cast. You really get an idea for the difficulties and lifestyle of these clam diggers. You know these guys are toast and how they're clinging to a life that is long gone.
The character who wrote the screenplay and acts as the least-favorable character was just an awesome actor. Also, Paul Rudd [of 40-Year old virgin fame, among others] is really impressing me for the quality of his acting. He's just a likeable, funny actor that you can't take your eyes off.
Totally recommended movie. Awesome. As good as "Herman USA"
