Plot: While practically everyone is aware of the fact that birds fly south for the winter, and return home in the spring, few are aware of just how arduous the journey can be. Jacques Perrin, a noted actor and film producer in his native France, decided to document this process, using flocks of birds who had been trained to ignore the distractions of his camera crew, and employing a variety of state-of-the-art technology to capture as unobtrusively as possible the flight paths of different birds from around the globe. The result was Winged Migration, a visually dazzling documentary that records the flight of dozens of different birds as they follow their navigational instincts and make the taxing journey to more temperate climates in the fall, all chronicled without the use of narration. The first directorial effort for Perrin, Winged Migration received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Winged Migration a success

This is a great "nature" piece constantly leaving the viewer wondering where the camera is and how did they get those fantastic shots?

This is a great DVD to pop in on a rainy day or a day that one needs to unwind a bit. Very peaceful and amazing video.

Disappointing
Added 10/2/2009

Based on reviews I expected this to be amazing. Unfortunately, it suffered from the following problems from my perspective:

- No "character development." That is, you see a lot of different kinds of birds flying and some on-the-ground footage, but you are told virtually nothing about the various birds. "The such and such flies X miles from some place to some other place," says the subtitle. Then you watch some of those birds flying for a while and then onto the next bird. I kept wanting to know about the birds, but teaching me about them apparently wasn't part of the intent of the film.

- I expected it to be about migrating birds. To a great extent it was, but a lot of it was footage filmed of hand-raised birds trained to fly with ultralights and boats and those birds weren't migrating anywhere. They were shipped in crates on planes to the various locations. They don't explain this during the film. During the film it just seemed weird that migrating birds would let anything with a camera get that close. It's not until the "making of" featurette that they tell you they hand-raised a bunch of birds, imprinted on them, and trained them to fly with ultralights and alongside boats. Don't get me wrong. They invested a lot of time and energy raising and imprinting those birds, and they did a great job, but I felt like I'd been sold a bill of goods watching a movie about migrating birds when much of the footage was actually of pet birds flying with ultralights while not migrating anywhere. In the end I thought the "making of" featurette was more satisfying than the film.

The bottom line is that it's a lot of footage of birds flying. It was okay, but it left me feeling somehow unsatisfied.

the best I've seen to date

I've seen hundreds of nature documentaries since I was very young and I say with certainty that this is simply the best bird documentary I've ever seen. I've never seen a documentary like this where one gets the feeling as if they were traveling with birds in migration all around the world. The photography is something to behold. I was completely in awe the whole 90 minutes watching this film. Not only is the photography breathtaking, the background music is brilliant and the narration is flawless. This is a must see for all nature lovers and bird enthusiasts.

Unforgettable Photography Ruined by Horrid Music

My advice -- watch this with the sound off. The video of the birds is like nothing I have ever seen before -- unforgetable. The music is akin to, well, imagine if Enya had a retarded sibling who tried to do mood music like Enya....you get the picture!
