Plot: One of the short stories in a best-selling collection by author Stephen King becomes this mystery adapted for director Scott Hicks by screenwriter William Goldman, who previously transformed a King story into a box-office hit (Misery, 1990). In the summer of 1960, young Bobby Garfield (Anton Yelchin) is sharing adventures with his best friends Carol (Mika Boorem) and Sully (Will Rothhaar) when an enigmatic lodger named Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) rents a room in his family's boarding house. Bobby's self-absorbed, widowed mother Liz (Hope Davis) couldn't care less about her son, so Bobby, who is being tormented by local bullies, quickly befriends the otherworldly Ted, becoming his confidante, and reading the paper to him to save the aging man's failing eyesight. Soon, Bobby learns that Ted possesses supernatural gifts, has a haunted past, and is being pursued by sinister men whose intentions are unclear. Hearts in Atlantis co-stars David Morse, who appeared in the previous King adaptation The Green Mile (1999), as the adult Bobby. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

greatly undervalued KING . SCOTT HICKS is an excellent director (SHINE) . in his very capable hands this film deserves equal status with similar superb KING films as noted in the editorial review above . i'd have liked to see a little more character development . that aside , i find this to be a tremendously absorbing and emotionally wrenching picture . thank you SCOTT . and as always ANTHONY .

A mature yet wholesome coming-of-age drama.

Hearts In Atlantis has absolutely nothing to do with the legendary lost continent; when you see the film you'll understand its title. The real plot of the movie focuses on an 11-year-old boy named Bobby Garfield and the people in his life. He is an only-child who lives with his widowed mother in 1960 small-town Connecticut and has two close friends, one male and one female. But the person who will ultimately make the biggest impact on his life is Ted Brautigan, a mysterious new tenant played by Anthony Hopkins, who becomes a father-figure to young Bobby as he grows up and faces many challenges. Hearts In Atlantis is a film about the power of friendship and being able leave the past behind and move on with life. It is very much a mature drama and may make you cry, but it is also uplifting in its own way. All the cast members deliver emotional performances and director Scott Hicks (Shine) does a good job as well. The DVD offers several special features including feature-length commentary by the director, an interview with Anthony Hopkins, also by Scott Hicks, and a beautiful photo gallery. Ebert and Roeper give this movie "two big thumbs up" and so do I. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates this sort of drama.

Good movie if you read the book-which I did.Could have been better, but probably to tough to send the story into adulthood-great acting performance by the girl and David Morse.

Hearts in Atlantis - a wonderful film starring Anthony Hopkins.

Hearts in Atlantis was a five star film for me. This wonderful movie, starring Anthony Hopkins, Anton Yelchin and Mika Boorem, takes us places we never knew existed in the human condition and back. All characters were played honestly and simply. I did not read the King novel it was based on and had no prior expectations about this film. As always Hopkins was pure magic. Simply a great and very moving film!
