Plot: Based on the true story of a priest who risked his life in order to help people no one else would touch (a wager he would eventually lose), Father Damien stars David Wenham as the titular Belgian saint. In 1872, Damien, a young Catholic priest serving as a missionary near Hawaii, volunteers to spend three months working in a colony for victims of leprosy on the island of Molokai. When he arrives, he discovers the lepers have been herded to a barely inhabitable part of the island where they're treated like animals. Damien is shocked, and makes it his crusade to improve the lives of the lepers, planting trees to help buffer the island's strong winds and building huts to house the sicker members of the tribe. Damien also concerns himself with their spiritual needs, restoring a sense of dignity and self-respect among the diseased and urging them away from drinking, sex, and other sinful behavior. At first, Damien's pleas to the mainland for medicine, supplies, and medical help fall on deaf ears, but soon the press picks up on Damien's story -- which only angers the Hawaiian government, who would prefer the plight of the lepers be forgotten. Damien is destined to spend the last years of his life on Molokai when he contacts the disease himself, working to ease the pain of his fellow victims to his last breath. Father Damien boasts a star-studded supporting cast, including Sam Neill, Peter O'Toole, Leo McKern, Kris Kristofferson, and Derek Jacobi. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Product great but suggest an improvement in process
Added 11/11/2009

I had purchased the DVD as a gift for someone and so the "ship to" address was different from the billing address. I had assumed that the recipient would get information as to who the purchaser was. They did not. I did write to the 3rd party seller who told me that they do not receive this information from Amazon. I think that it would be an improvement if that information was included so that it could be shared with the ultimate recipient.

A great film, but they can't get the DVD right
Added 4/4/2009

This is a great film, which has been reviewed favorably by most others. But the DVD versions leave something to be desired.

The film was made in 1999. The first DVD version, by A-PIX Entertainment, had the film in Letterbox wide screen 2:35. There were Spanish subtitles, which is good. But there were no English subtitles, which neglected the hearing impaired viewers.

The DVD was done over in 2008, by Gateway Films. The scenes were divided up differently, which is okay. And the Spanish subtitles were replaced by English ones. Maybe they could have had both. But the worst part is the switch from Letterbox to Full Frame.

In one early scene, about 6 minutes into the film, a group of priests are sitting in a church listening to their bishop. The Letterbox version shows five priests in the first row: three on one side of the aisle, and two on the other. The Full Frame version shows two priests on one side, and one and a half on the other.

Why is there still an excuse to do Full Frame DVDs? What they did in an insult to the cinematography and integrity of the film. If you can find it, get the earlier Letterbox version, even without the English subtitiles.

Beautiful scenery and great cast. I'm happy that this film was made to shed light on this man of faith who stepped out to love and serve others. Inspiring.

Molokai and the life of Father Damien comes alive in film
Added 9/29/2008

This movie is so well done I feel I am viewing the Akashic Records of the lives of Father Damien, the community of lepers on Molokai, the Hawaiian royal family, people from the government and the Catholic church. Inspiring and beautiful, Father Damien becomes to me a mentor of the Spirit and a heart to emulate. Janet Orion
