For this follow-up effort, Peralta leaves the land for the sea, focusing his lens on the world of surfing. Narrated by Sean Penn, just as Dogtown and Z-Boys was, Riding Giants attempts to trace the origins of surfing and also explore the growth and progress of surf culture. Among the surfing luminaries who chime in on topics varying from the business of the sport to the big wave are Laird Hamilton, Greg Noll, and Jeff Clark. Hoping to find the critical success akin to its predecessor, Riding Giants premiered at the {~2004 Sundance Film Festival}. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Can that be real??
Added 1/20/2009

Worth it all for the first 3 minutes; can that be real?....It is. Overall not quite as entertaining as "Step Into Liquid", but a great time none-the-less.

A Mix of Incredible Surfing Imagery and Intro to Surfing Basics
Added 9/12/2008

The opening sequence of surfer Mike Parsons dropping down the face of a gigantic wave is mesmerizing. That sequence alone is almost worth the price of purchase, but there is plenty of other amazing, jaw-dropping video to admire that makes this video attractive to anyone with affinity for wave and board sports. You do get a chance to let your attention drift from time to time as the story drags on the less interesting filler. The pontification about wave formation and rescue training for the Billabong team is a bit overdone, but these section allow the adrenaline to subside a bit before launching into more spectacular footage. The short pieces on kite boarding, wind-surfing aerobatics, and hydroplane boards are interesting filler, too. This is a good video both for those already deep into the sport and for those who only want to frolic in the water for a while.

Interesting. Great footage.

Great footage. Not really a very in depth movie. I think I was hoping for surfing/tropical beaches - a "take me on vacation from the comfort of my couch" movie. It is not. But it is a really interesting documentary on big wave and tow-in surfing.

Super video!

My husband and I go to the North Shore of Oahu twice a year to watch the the adrenalin-charged maniacs ride monumental walls of water. In an effort to try to take photographs to capture these monsters to bring home to show friends and family, until we get a HD movie camera, we found something better--Riding Giants. This has to be the best big wave riding video ever made! If you want to really see what surfing is all about and hear the liquid thunder of these waves, then this video is a MUST! You will not be disappointed.

Larry H. has nothing else to do but surf. He can not make or fix anything useful. Typical.
