Plot: Kiefer Sutherland stars as an NYPD detective-turned-security guard who discovers something sinister lurking in the mirrors of a fire-damaged department store in Haute Tension writer/director Alexandre Aja's menacing study in the origins of evil. It's been just about a year since mercurial police detective Ben Carson (Sutherland) was suspended from the NYPD for the fatal shooting of an undercover officer, and ever since that fateful day he's been locked in a self-destructive spiral of anger and alcoholism. Increasingly isolated from his wife and kids, Ben spends most nights crashed-out at his sister Angela's (Amy Smart) apartment in Queens. But Ben hasn't given up hope just yet, and in order to get his life back together and prove that he's still capable of supporting his family he takes a job as the night watchman at the Mayflower department store. The Mayflower used to be a lavish symbol of inner-city prosperity, that is, until a raging inferno gutted the building while claiming numerous lives in the process. These days, the Mayflower is a scorched reminder of human misery, the ornate mirrors therein reflecting a suffering so profound that it begins to wear on Ben's already-fragile psyche. Not only that, but whatever force dwells behind the shimmering glass seems to have gained the power to alter reality as well. After Ben gazes into the mirrors and sees a vision of himself being relentlessly tortured, he is horrified to experience violent convulsions, spontaneous bleeding, and frightening asphyxiation. And while his sister is always willing to lend a sympathetic ear, she chalks the anomalies up to an unusually potent mix of stress and anxiety. Unfortunately for Ben, his estranged wife, Amy (Paula Patton), isn't nearly as forgiving. A prosaic NYPD medical examiner who has seen her fair share of tragedy, Amy fears that Ben's erratic behavior could be placing their children in danger. Later, as Ben begins to draw connections between his increasingly gruesome visions and a former Mayflower security guard who vanished without a trace, he begins to suspect that an unimaginable evil is using the mirrors as a gateway into the real world, and that his family is in mortal danger from forces beyond their realm of understanding. Perhaps if he Ben can manage to convince Amy that their children's lives are at risk, he can summon the courage to face the greatest evil he has ever known. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A decent horror flick
Added 10/12/2009

I rented this movie after it was recommended to me through the Netflix recommendation system, and for the most part I was very satisfied.

Kiefer Sutherland plays an ex cop who becomes confronted by daemons that live in mirrors of a burnt-down New York department store. As they threaten him and his family, he uses all of his detective skills to destroy these sinister forces. The movie is well paced and well acted, with the music score and visuals that greatly enhance the whole experience. The twist ending also makes you rethink many aspects of the movie, which comes as an added bonus.

If you are looking for an entertaining horror flick and are not too squeamish about the cutting/dismembering scenes then give this movie a chance. It may not be the most outstanding horror film you'll ever see, but it's certainly worth watching.

I remember being excited about this movie when I saw the previews. Nothing like seeing Kiefer Sutherland turn all goofy looking in a mirror. "just washing my face, ahh I'm retarded looking now!" The movie reminds me a little bit of the ring. A lot of newspaper rummaging which eventually leads to a trip out to the country. Nothing says horror like a country barn with a bunch of yokels. The scene that steals the movie though is the bathtub scene. If you haven't seen it let me just say it gets pretty gnarly. I didn't care too much for the ending though which is why I will only give it 3 stars. The ending was kinda lacking in my opinion. Lacking, that is a definitive conclusion. While I would not recommend buying it is a worthy rental.

DECENT HORROR FILM WITH A GOOD CAST, BUT...........!
Added 9/27/2009

'Mirrors' is a well made film with a good cast and pacing. The film has some decent scares and a creepy setting, but the ending is a little disappointing. Keifer Sutherland in yet another Jack Bauer type role is convincing as a suspended cop who takes a job as a security guard in an old fancy department store with some creepy history. The department store had a horrific fire and makes a very eerie setting with its burnt mannequins, grand hallways, ceilings and statues. It's not a great film, but it's better than the average horror garbage out there.

Sutherland Chews Scenery LIke A Pro
Added 9/16/2009

I like Keifer Sutherland. I like Alexandre Aja. It stands to reason that I'd like any film both are involved in and yet that's not entirely true in this case. I can't say I disliked Mirrors either but I just didn't feel as though I were watching something original, well, as original as a loose remake of a Korean horror film can be. Hard to explain but without the occasional gore sequences, including a scene that actually improved Amy Smart's looks, this film just seemed to daydream from beginning to finale, all the while offering nothing but cliché after cliché.

In true Hollywood horror fashion, Sutherland discovers there's a ghost, seeks out the origin of said ghost, figures out a way to appease the ghost's anger and all is right in the world. Sorta. It's not all that cut and dry but that's pretty much the formula this, and every other predictable, supernaturally-themed Hollywood horror film, appears to follow. Predictable is the keyword. I suppose that's why I prefer to stick with original Asian cinema and let the "happy-enders," "hand-holders" and "spoon-feeders" have their paint-by-the-numbers remakes.

Mirrors sports solid acting, with a few exceptions being surprisingly horrible, Paula Patton is breathtaking in a low-cut, soaking wet shirt and some of the gore sequences were genuinely chilling. In my opinion, not some of Aja's best work but not so embarrassing that fans should begin calling for his early retirement.
