Plot: Inspired by a true story, director Edward Zwick's epic World War II drama Defiance tells the tale of three Jewish Eastern European brothers (Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, and Jamie Bell) who narrowly escape certain death at the hands of the Nazis, subsequently vowing to avenge the deaths of their loves ones by launching a desperate battle against the forces that seek to exterminate their entire race. The year is 1941, and the setting is Nazi-occupied Poland. The Final Solution is in full effect, and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being slaughtered wholesale. Tuvia (Craig), Zus (Schreiber), and Asael (Bell) have miraculously managed to escape into the dense surrounding forest. Having played in these woods since childhood, the brothers have a distinct advantage over their adversaries, and soon decide that simply surviving is not enough. In order to make a difference, they must take action, but in order to take action they will need support. As whispers of their bravery take wind, others like them appear determined to lay their lives on the line for the cause of freedom. Tuvia has become the de facto leader of the group, but he's still somewhat reluctant to take on such a heavy responsibility and his brother Zus expresses concern that his idealistic plan will ultimately bring about the group's downfall. With winter setting in, everyone works to create a functioning community that will help them endure the frigid months that lie ahead, and Asael reluctantly finds himself caught in the crossfire of his older siblings' rivalry. Is it possible to keep faith alive in a time when the world seems devoid of humanity and survival becomes a way of life? ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A Jewish Resistance Group of Whom to be Proud.
Added 11/22/2009

If you are tired of seeing wimpy, sub-serviant Jews being ripped out of their homes and herded into boxcars destined to deposit them at the doors of the "showers" at distant Consentration Camps, this is the film for you!

Daniel Craig's portrayal of the home-grown leader of over a thousand Jews was perfection. The strength he showed was magnificent. As a Jew myself, I was proud of this real-life Hero in this true story. Actually, the casting was perfection all across the board. The sets underlined the hardships suffered by the resistance group.

This definately wasn't "Fiddler..."

Ever since I saw the advertisements for this video I was waiting for it to come to my theatre. If it ever did, I missed it. Tried to purchase it at my local Walmart but it never arrived. Finally purchased it here and the wait was worth it. It is a very good movie. In fact it is the kind of movie that you can watch multiple times and see something that you mised. I highly recommend this video to anyone. It was fantastic.

Defiant Defiance
Added 11/5/2009

Defiance is a movie about a little known effort of Jewish brothers to not only protect about 1000 Jews from the Nazis, but to form them into a self-defending community. It's not a special effects movie although there are battle sequences and the characters are well developed and believable.

Starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber it also includes a substantial supporting cast from several countries, each reknown in their own right.

Highly recommended.

Better than I expected

The Bottom Line:

Unfairly derided as middlebrow, this intelligent World War II film by Edward Zwick wisely eschews action for a more nuanced exploration of the rigors of leadership, the endemic nature of antisemitism in Russian cultures, and the difficulty (and importance) of survival; one of the more underrated films of 2008, Defiance is a movie worth seeing.

3.5/4

The Jew's Brigade: Protecting & Paying Back!
Added 10/19/2009

Edward Zwick's compromise with this film is absolute: he directed, wrote and produced the movie.
Usually movies based on historically facts are plagued with inaccuracies. Fortunately this is not the case as it wasn't with "Glory" (1989) also directed by Zwick!

The story, based on real characters, follows four Belarusian brothers of Jewish ancestry driven into the forest to escape the Nazi extermination parties.
There they will be joined little by little by other escapees till they number more than a thousand.
Tuvia Bielski the elder brother takes charge of them and organizes them into a heterogeneous Brigade. He decides that if they are able to live one more day and die free, it is worth the sacrifice.
Incredibly they survive against all odds: collaborationist police troops, Nazi SS troops, refractory non-Jew civilians and prejudiced Soviet militia.
No weapons, no food, no shelter, no experience. Only their outmost determination to survive and pay back sustains them!

Playacting is over standard with Daniel Craig as Tuvia, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski, Allan Corduner as Shamon Haretz and Ravil Isyanov as Colonel Panchenko as the best of a compact numerous cast.

Edward Zwick delivers one his best film up to this day. Better IMHO to "The Last Samurai" (2003) that was a very good one and at par with "Glory" (1989).
I hope he will give the public a good version of one of my favorite fiction book: "The Lions of Al-Rassan" (promised for some date in the near future).

The musical score is due to multi-awarded James Newton Howard, he has eight Oscar's nomination, including one for this film, between 1992 and 2009 and won numerous ASCAP awards. The equilibrated score underline different kind of sequences: action, romance, depression, nostalgia or defiance.

Portuguese Eduardo Serra is in charge of cinematography and produce excellent forest images.
This is for me one of the best films showing resistance movement in occupied Europe. Enjoy!
