Plot: Elmo Williams, the veteran Hollywood film editor who gained fame for his work on High Noon, serves as director of the medium-budget western The Tall Texan. Lloyd Bridges plays the title character, a convicted murderer named Ben Trask. While being escorted to prison, Trask talks his captors into prospecting for gold. A rich vein has been found in Indian territory, attracting gold-hunters like flies to honey. Despite warnings from the local tribe, the prospectors refuse to leave. Even when a compromise is reached with the Indians, at least one of the gold-seekers oversteps his bounds. A climactic Indian attack is thus a foregone conclusion, and since none of the white characters is particularly sympathetic, the viewer is hard put not to root for the Indians. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Elmo Williams tells the inside story
Added 11/12/2007

We have a monthly event in our town called "The Art Walk", and Elmo Williams is a frequent contributor to the entertainment. On November 10, 2007, Elmo told the story of the difficulties encountered in making this film with a budget of only $104,000 and about some of the personalities involved with the production. You may or may not like this film, but it will be worthwhile seeing what a great filmmaker can do with a fraction of the money available to some of his contemporaries.

A GREAT 50s Western
Added 7/22/2006

After over fifty years this little western still holds up very well. Director Elmo Williams put together a great cast with Bridges, Cobb, Windsor and the wonderfully hateful Luther Adler, in a tale of gold, Indians, and rugged action. The final scene, with Bridges fending off Indians as he claws his way through the rocks is classic. If you liked "High Noon" "Treasure of Sierra Madre" or "Stagecoach" this one is for you!
