Plot: You'll Never Get Rich was the first of two films made by Fred Astaire at Columbia, and also the first in which he was paired with his favorite female dancing partner--not Ginger Rogers or Cyd Charisse, but Rita Hayworth. Fred and Rita play a team of Broadway dancers whose partnership is abruptly rent asunder when Fred is drafted into the Army. Unable to adapt to military routine, Astaire frequently ends up in the guardhouse; during one of these visits, he and the Delta Rhythm Boys collaborate on the lively song-and-dance number The A-starable Rag. Back to the plot: Rita shows up on the army base as the girl friend of captain John Hubbard. This leads to more fancy footwork, and, of course, a happy ending for our stars. Though the Cole Porter score yielded no hits, one of the songs, Since I Kissed My Baby Goodbye, was nominated for an Academy Award. Robert Benchley provides comic relief, as he would in the subsequent Astaire vehicle The Sky's the Limit. You'll Never Get Rich was followed by the even better Astaire-Hayworth pairing You Were Never Lovelier. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Rita Hayworth was never lovlier. The script is a wonderful throughback to the days when movies were movies.
Fred Astaire claimed Rita was his favorite dance partner saying that she countered his every movement.

If you appreciate, Fred Astaire, You will really enjoy this movie . There are stunning dance scenes with Astaire & Rita Hayworth that are exciting as well as equisite. The plot is often very humorous & takes place on an Army base during WWII..It is a very enjoyable film to watch and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fabulous dancing & the era of the 40's.

Anything with Fred is worthwhile to purchase on DVD so you can keep zooming back and forth watching all his dance moves over and over. excellent value too.

just wish they would put out The Sky is the Limit with Joan Leslie - one of my favourites that I just have a worn out video copy that is 20 years old

Hayworth & Astaire: Dance Duo of the Golden Era
Added 8/16/2008

Rita Hayworth was born to be a dancer with the likes of Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly. It's a wonder that Ginger Rogers was ever paired with Astaire since Astaire claimed that Hayworth was the best dancer he'd been paired with. Certainly Hayworth was a better box office draw as well. Appearance wise, Hayworth was the "Love Goddess." Dance wise, Rita Hayworth is a marvel to watch; stop the film, rewind & repeat. For a lady who was so soft spoken, shy, family-centered & yet, business strong, Hayworth seems to unleash raw energy on every dance floor she's ever been filmed. Even though "Gilda" became her signature claim to fame film, this one reveals a much more mature dancer who certainly gave Astaire the most talented, beautiful match he ever had on screen~
