Plot: After winning an Academy Award for their documentary Down and Out in America (1986), actress-director Lee Grant and her producer-husband Joseph Feury filmed this comedy-drama based on an original script by playwright Monte Merrick. In a small Southern town, the McDermott family has owned and operated a popular chicken restaurant for years. Each of the three McDermott boys, Brian (Tim Quill), Kit (Dermot Mulroney), and Duncan (Sean Astin) expects to inherit part of the business from their father (Jim Haynie). While enjoying liberal amounts of skirt-chasing, marijuana-smoking, and alcohol consumption in their off hours, the McDermotts have big plans for the place, but then dad drops a bombshell -- he's sold the restaurant without consulting his family, leaving each son to struggle with his newfound, unwanted independence. In the meantime, mom (Melinda Dillon) considers reuniting with her old band. Because of the bankruptcy of its producer, Hemdale Film Corporation, Staying Together (1989) was shelved for over a year before its release. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Small gem of a film with a great cast

I remembered seeing this on cable quite a few years ago and decided to search this movie out and as luck would have it, I found it here on Amazon.com. The first reviewer "A Customer" describes this movie perfectly. Good actors seen in their younger days handling family and life situations that are seemingly real here like Melinda Dillon, Dermot Mulroney, Sean Astin, Daphne Zuniga, Stockard Channing, Dinah Manoff (a fav of mine from "Soap"). The characters are well defined and likable. The script is peppered with comedy, feeling and dialog you didn't usually find in films from the late 80's and early 90's. I don't buy many movies a year let alone older films but this was well worth the money I spent. Unforgettable scene: Sean Astin burying his face in a pantyhosed Dinah Manoff's large bosom while she's trying to change for work. Cheeky devil.

I had never heard of this film. Why not! I ran across it at a local video store, checked out the cast and director, and decided to rent it. // There is great good humor in this movie of brothers coming of age,and there is the correct amount of pathos in a family coming to terms with an unexpected death. // Lee Grant handles the cast and the story with a deft and knowing touch. But I ask again why wasn't this movie properly promoted.
