Plot: An international comedy sensation based on a successful French stage play, La Cage aux Folles depicts the farcical chaos that results when a gay man attempts to pose as straight for the benefit of his son's future in-laws. Renato (Ugo Tognazzi) owns a popular nightclub and is the long-time lover of Zaza (Michel Serrault), a female impersonator who is the club's main attraction. Unfortunately, Renato's son Laurent (Remy Laurent) has told none of this to his future father-in-law, an important figure in a morally conservative political organization. Not wanting to ruin his son's chance of happiness, Renato agrees to pose as a straight man, but he finds his familiar habits, and those of the even more flamboyant Zaza, getting in the way at every turn. Zaza is the one who comes up with what he thinks is an ideal solution: he'll dress in drag and pose as Renato's wife. Naturally, the plan does not pan out as expected. La Cage aux Folles' pleasant, unthreatening comic sensibility attracted a large mainstream audience in both Europe and the United States, which was at the time unusual for a film with a homosexual theme. Indeed, the film was popular enough to inspire two remakes: a stage musical and, nearly two decades later, the Hollywood comedy The Birdcage with Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Gene Hackman. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

La Cage Aux Folles (original French version)
Added 9/19/2009

Though the images are bit dated now, the humor is timeless. The prejudices of society are still the same, so today's audiences will enjoy the film as much as those of us who saw it back in the 70's.

The film doesn't dwell on the relationship of the two men, but on the need to fool the parents of their son's fiance, who would stop the wedding if they knew the parents of the Laurent were gay.

Sound quality could be better.

An oldie but a goodie
Added 8/26/2009

This original French farce is still a great watch, and certainly vastly better than the mangled USA version (entitled The Birdcage). The delightful european humor, the emphasis on character development, and the witty and wry look at the conflict between a harmless gay relationship and a charmless dimwitted fundamentalist family of snobs is highly entertaining.

The Bottom Line:

A funny and breezy French comedy, La Cage Aux Folles was more recently remade as The Birdcage and it's the latter I recommend to modern audiences; while the original is a successful film in its own right, the modern American moviewatcher will find more to laugh at in the Mike Nichols remake.

Funniest french movie ever
Added 3/22/2009

I saw this movie when it was first screened in Australia (1980's)and thought it the funniest movie ever. I have seen the Birdcage and that just doesn't compare to the original. It is so much funnier to watch in french even if you have to read the subtitles. It's an old movie but it's definitely a goodie.

Cannot be outdone
Added 1/29/2009

The original is brilliant. The Birdcage becomes a charicature of itself.
The original simply cannot be outdone.
For those who have not viewed the original..do yourself a huge favor and
give your eyes and ears a feast...plain and simple.

You won't be able to "double your pleasure or double your fun " with La Cage 2. This flick is La Cage (deja Vou )Same players, different plot. If plagued with Insomnia, this one is guaranteed to put you to sleep. Something important is missing ? Funny?=no, entertaining?=no, boring?,=yes

GREAT MOVIE
Added 2/13/2007

before the movie "bird cage" this movie predates it by about 20 years.
Sadly the American public would not have allowed such a movie back in the 1970's, ITs a pleasure to see how very simlar these two movies are to one another. THIS movie really makes one laugh.
