Plot: Spencer Tracy won his second Oscar for his portrayal of Father Edward J. Flanagan--then promptly turned the statuette over to the real Father Flanagan out of gratitude. The priest's philosophy that no boy will grow up bad if given a chance in life culminates in his formation of Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. Unable to raise funds through proper channels, Flanagan finds that his staunchest supporters are the workaday folks who have faith in him; none is stauncher than Jewish pawnbroker Henry Hull, who digs deep into his pockets to help Flanagan realize his dream. The story of the struggle to get Boys Town on its feet paralleled with the regeneration of punkish Mickey Rooney, the younger brother of criminal Edward Norris. At first a wise-guy rebel, Rooney rises to a position of authority, responsibility and respect in Boys Town's self-maintained government. Boys Town, by the way, is the source of the classic line He ain't heavy--he's my brother. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This DVD contains two movies, "Boys Town" and the sequel with the same actors, "Men of Boys Town". The sequel is as good or better.

The featurette showing the real Boys Town orphanage for boys in Nebraska and the real Father Flanagan during what looks like the 1950's or 1960's is fascinating.

The first story is about the tough, younger brother of a gangster (Mickey Rooney) coming to live at the Boys Town orphanage. He has mixed feelings about being there and does not fit in. The name Boys Town is because the boys elect a mayor and dorm commissioners from among themselves. The boys make their own laws and police themselves to a degree.

The second story continues Mickey Rooney's adventures at Boys Town. He is tasked with getting an abused and crippled boy to smile for the first time. Having become a good and caring person under the influence of Father Flanagan, Mickey Rooney is exasperated to meet a new boy who is more difficult than he used to be.

I wish they would interview guys who lived at Boys Town during the days of Father Flanagan. The Boys Town website implies a new format (house-parents v. dorms with commissioners elected from the boys) It appears the boys did more trade apprenticeships in the old days.

We are planning a trip to Omaha soon, and will visit Boy's Town while we're there. This is a great tool to educate and build understanding and excitement before our trip.

Feel Good Movie
Added 3/12/2009

Sometimes you just want a "feel good" movie. Boys town has great actors, a true story mixed with Hollywood fluff, and a pace that keeps the movie going forward with only a few dry spots. Spencer Tracy is great and pulls off one of his best performances ever. The supporting cast of child actors(Mickey Rooney & Henry Hull) fit into their parts like a hand in a glove. The movie should be updated with a new cast...this is a remake waiting to happen. An inspirational story.
