Plot: Looking like death warmed over, Jack Lemmon plays the aging father of Ted Danson. Always proud of being able to fend for himself, Lemmon despises being reliant upon others, but his enfeebled state does not allow him his old independence. For his part, Danson resents having to care for his dad as he would for an infant. Things take an upward turn when a Doctor Feelgood (Zakes Mokae) enters the scene, pumping Lemmon full of self-confidence. But then Lemmon is stricken with cancer, an affliction that he can't jolly himself out of. As the reality of his imminent death strikes everyone around him, Lemmon retreats into fantasy, recalling the past happy events of his life as though they're happening here and now. The rest of the family humors their dying dad, and in so doing draws closer together than they've been in years. TV sitcom maestro Gary David Goldberg co-produced and directed Dad, and also adapted the screenplay from the novel by William Wharton. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I watched this movie on tv one night.....commercials just about ruined it tho. It was such a feel good movie, I just had to get a copy for myself. I like the chemistry between the actors. Ted Danson seems tailor made for the role. And you just can't get any better than Jack Lemmon and Olympia Dukakis.

one of Jack Lemmon's best

Jack Lemmon gets all the praises he deserves, but I don't know why NO ONE seems to recognize his GENIUS in this movie. I'm not a Ted Danson fan, but he was actually terrific in this film. Kevin Spacey has a very minor part, but he was BRILLIANT as he always is.

And let's not forget Olympia Dukakis. She's SO good at playing the old ladies with strong personalities!

Some decent performaces, but overall a rather mediocre effort

Ted Danson is pretty good as a business exec who becomes very attached to his father, played by Jack Lemmon. Lemmon himself is also not bad as the aging father, but the movie itself is full of contrived scenes that are supposed to be heartwarming, but come across as predictable and sometimes ludicrous. Also, I was rather displeased with Lemmon's makeup, which doesn't seem very realistic (I can't believe it was nominated for an Oscar!).

One of the most wonderful movies ever.

If many of my other reviews have been read, then it is recognized that I can be quite verbose and sometimes eloquent.

This review requires neither (though is worthy of both)... but the title speaks volumes. DAD truly is one of the most wonderful movies that I have ever viewed.

... and Jack Lemmon is phenomenal. He truly deserved a Golden Globe, at the very least.

Please watch this movie... even the coldest of hearts will be warmed.
