Plot: George Orwell's political fable about corruption and betrayal in post-revolutionary Russia gets a new look in this version that employs a cast of real animals alongside digitally manipulated critters and lifelike beasts crafted by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. At the Manor Farm, the alcoholic master Mr. Jones (Pete Postlethwaite) is cruel to his animals and has horribly mismanaged the property. One night, the wise but elderly pig Old Major (voice of Peter Ustinov) gathers the animals and speaks of a remarkable dream, in which the animals throw off their tyrannical human masters and learn to reap the fruits of their own labors. After Old Major's death, two other pigs, Snowball (voice of Kelsey Grammer) and Napoleon (voice of Patrick Stewart) lead a revolution that drives Jones from his land and leaves the animals in charge of their own destiny. After their revolt, Snowball and Napoleon rule side by side, but Napoleon soon becomes drunk with power and squeezes Snowball out of authority, eventually turning the other animals against him. With Boxer (voice of Paul Scofield), a simple-minded but loyal and physically powerful horse, as a role model, Napoleon leads the animals on a campaign of self-denial and hard work that will bring them security and freedom; however, it soon becomes obvious that Napoleon is growing fat while the other animals are starving, and he is quickly becoming the sort of creature he once waged war against. Animal Farm received its American premiere on the TNT cable TV network in October 1999; it opened as a theatrical release in several other countries shortly afterward. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I bought this DVD to use with my English 12 classes when we studied George Orwell. I was a great addition to my curriculum.

Does not Follow the Book!
Added 6/13/2009

Students looking to cheat will not be happy with this version; however, using real animals in the movie and the good "star" voices make it a good version. The point of Animal Farm as told by Orwell is well-made in this made for TV movie using updated propaganda media for the villainous pigs. Clever imagery and realistic human scenes help with the exception of the characterization of Mrs. Pilkington. Gratuitous sex under the covers with Farmer Jones adds nothing to the story, and her winking at Napoleon implying that she will be in his bed is just gross. I do recommend the dvd with that one reservation until someone creates a truer treatment of the classic book.

Its a decent film to use in a history classroom. It gives students the chance to see why communism in the Soviet Union did not work in a non-traditional way. It is not a great film for entertainment but useful as a teaching tool.

Good adaptation
Added 8/2/2008

This is a well-done adaptation of the book. It isn't perfect, but kids like it much better than the 1950s cartoon version. For teachers looking for a good version to accompany the book, I recommend it. I have used both and sometimes use both as a good jumping off place for discussion.
