Plot: Multimedia horror maven Clive Barker followed the success of his feature directorial debut Hellraiser with this equally surreal effort, based on his novella {~Cabal}. The story involves the plight of Aaron Boone Craig Sheffer, a young man tormented by visions of monstrous, graveyard-dwelling creatures. Seeking the aid of his clinically cold therapist Dr. Decker (played by Canadian horror auteur David Cronenberg) in deciphering his nightmares, Boone becomes convinced that his frequent blackouts are linked to a recent spate of mutilation murders in the area. His frantic search for the truth leads him to the subterranean city of Midian, the dwelling place of a mythical race of undead nocturnal monsters known as the Nightbreed. But it is only after he is cornered and shot dead by police that Boone's real journey begins -- he finds himself resurrected as one of the Breed and initiated into Midian's inner circle, where his latent supernatural powers are unleashed, leading to his realization of Dr. Decker's sinister role in the murders for which he was framed. Though Barker's unique and graphic vision is somewhat blunted by choppy editing (thanks to relentless tampering from the studio), this is nevertheless a fine sophomore project from a talented storyteller; the central conceit of presenting the monsters as the good guys -- at least compared to the gun-and-bible-toting lunatics who hunt them -- is handled with verve and originality. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

A great feast of a movie from Clive Barker
Added 11/10/2009

Nightbreed is one of my favorite horror movies of all times but I think that they should allow Clive Barker the chance to release a director's cut of his film. I've heard that the original cut of the film deals with issues of homosexuality and as a gay man I'd be interested in seeing this version of the film. There are a great many of us in the LGBT community who enjoy watching horror movies and maybe the film studios should remember that. With that said Clive Barker rocks and I cant wait to see what he might do in film's next.

One of the most underrated horror movies ever!

Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) has been having bizarre nightmares about monsters and there has been some horrific murders going on, his psychiatrist Dr. Deckar (David Cronenberg) believes he's going nuts until he is set up to be murdered. Boone's body is whisked away by a secret cult of outcast creatures called the Nightbreed and becomes one of them, however Deckar and some other humans have discovered their realm as a war between man and beast clashes for a true battle of who is the real monster.

Writer-Director Cliver Barker creates another outstanding masterpiece of the macabre combining ghastly horror with gothic fantasy all combined in one. The music score by Danny Elfman is quite outstanding especially the brilliant creature and make-up effects used in this motion picture which made it the best special effects film of the year 1990. After two years in the making, Mr. Barker delivered a very underrated cult classic of art with a moral about that sometimes humankind is the monster while the creatures are just misunderstood beings. The film is quite gory at times but some of them got cut out to avoid "X" rating back in 1990 as hopefully sometime Mr. Barker can release an unrated extended director's cut on DVD or Blu-Ray but for now, i recommend this fun and spiritual horror flick to fans of the genre.

This DVD contains a nice transfer with good sound with the only two extras being the trailer and bios.

Pretty good.

The first hour of this movie is actually really great. But after that, it gets a little messy and, frankly, a little too "Hollywood-ized." It almost feels tacked on. I feel Clive Barker's next film, Lord Of Illusions, would suffer the same way. It's like he was rushing to wrap things up.

Other than that, this is a solid piece of entertainment. Barker's knack for visual flair is on fine display here and the film is never boring because of it. Danny Elfman provides a thumping score. And how could you resist David Cronenberg as a masked psycho?

Recommended to horror/fantasy fans, but I hope Barker is eventually able to release his director's cut as I feel Nightbreed has the potential to improve greatly with those extra 25 minutes of footage.

I saw this video years ago. I was so glad I found a copy! If you are a Clive Barker fan, this is a must for your collection. I wish one day they they would do a sequel. With today's technology, it would be amazing!

Disappointing
Added 8/29/2008

I love horror movies and good vs evil themes. However this movie was really disappointing. Not scary, not unique, and very dated. Doesn't hold up to classic horror movies or more current ones. Instead, check out Jeeper Creepers, Mothman Prophesies, but don't waste your time here.
