Plot: Blood of Heroes features a sport that you're not likely to see on ESPN. It's called juggers, and Rutger Hauer is the champion jugger in the post-apocalyptic world; he goes from village to village with his entourage, brutishly taking on all comers. The action culminates in the bloody league championship. Joan Chen costars as Hauer's apprentice in the film, which was released in Australia as Salute of the Jugger. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

If you never saw this movie its a must for the post apocolyptic feel good sports movie. Its the best one evermade.
However the transfer that came with this DVD I would rate poor. I'm not a video phile but any dark scenes got really dark. I've seen this movie many times on VHS so I know it looked better then it did on this DVD. Still beggers can't be choosers its still a good movie.

Classic flick mixing sports, explicit violence, and post apocolyptic waste land. Think of it as your favorite football movie meets "Mad Max".

The Bottom Line:

Something of a cross between a standard sports film and The Road Warrior, The Blood of Heroes is a supremely entertaining little Australian film from the 80s; if that description sounds like it's up your alley, don't hestitate to rent it and learn about the awesome blood sport of jugging!

OK, the movie was an acquired taste, but the music is a bit more universal

Having listened to this disc a few times over the last couple of days to refresh my memory of it I can honestly say that this is a soundtrack where knowledge of the film isn't strictly necessary. Sure it always helps to have some affinity for the movie a soundtrack has been lifted from but here composer Todd Boekelheide has crafted a collection of sounds that not only did the job for the movie but are also unique enough to be of interest to the generic 'stirring music' fan.

As the composer himself points out in the brief but very useful liner notes the movie was a post apocalyptic affair which gave him a great excuse to throw in a whole bunch of disparate musical elements though as he points out, flutes and woodwinds are absent as they are just too fragile for the world of the Juggers, as most of the characters in the film are known - the film was actually known as Salute of the Jugger in many territories.

I really quite enjoyed this albums textures and some of it's stirring themes and given it's diversity of instrumentation it is a lively listen.
