Plot: Kevin Costner plays an ex-pilot who visits the posh Mexican estate of an old associate (Anthony Quinn) Tibey Mendes, for a bit of R & R. Tibey has turned into a very powerful Godfather type who rules his world and those who touch it. Costner can't help but notice his old friend's incredibly beautiful young wife (Madeleine Stowe) and before long they're involved in some sizzling hoochie-coo at the risk of being discovered by Mendes. Mendes eventually catches on and exacts a painful and cruel punishment on the reclusive lovers caught in their lustful liaison. Costner vows a pay-back and the last part of the movie involves his attempt to achieve it. ~ All Movie Guide

Revenge - Very Good but not Great
Added 11/22/2009

Kevin Costner has had at least one great movie, Dances with Wolves, some real stinkers, and some in between. Nevertheless I like him as an actor. Revenge has some very good parts and some mediocre parts but all-in-all this is a decent movie.

A poor example of the revenge genre
Added 9/29/2009

Lets see here, Kevin Costner goes to go visit his good friend, who he knows is a major drug lord, can't keep it in his pants, and boffs said drug lord's wife. Actually, The revenge should have rightly been Anthony Quinn's... if I was a rich and all powerful drug baron and one of my gringo friends bopped my wife, I'd be looking for some payback too, especially if it was someone as smirky and annoying as Kevin Costner... heck I'd get revenge just for Waterworld and The Postman.

As for the "extreme violence", as time has progressed and violence in films has become so extreme that it has become rote, the volence in Revenge no longer seems so extreme. All in all a disappointing film.

The Two Versions of Revenge.
Added 8/14/2009

There are two different versions of Revenge, and each one is a little different. I have both versions and have watched both of them. So, here is a little summary of the differences and I hope it helps you decide which version to get.

The Original Version of Revenge: Is in Full Frame Format and is 123 minutes long. It is Rated R.

Revenge The Directions Cut: Is in Widescreen format and is 100 minutes long. This version is Unrated.

Besides the differences listed above, one of the biggest differences in Revenge The Directions Cut is in the love scenes. In particular, when Kevin Costner and Madeline Stowe are in the jeep and are on their way to Kevin's cabin, they have a sexual encounter. I have to say it is on the pornographic side and it's kind of raunchy. I think that's why this version is unrated. But, besides this, if you notice Revenge The Directions Cut is actually 20% shorter than the Original Version. They literally take out 1/5 of the story out and make this movie into just about a sexual affair and revenge. Because of this, a lot of the story is missing, and we really miss out on the love between Kevin's character and Madeline's character.

After watching these two versions, I would definitely recommend getting The Original Version of Revenge because it is a more complete story and we really see the love between and desire between the love struck couple.

Revenge (unrated director's cut)

This is soooooooo much better than the more conservative
original release!! This is a must have for any Kevin Costner
fan!! It has extended scenes and director's commentaries that
are not on the original release!!

Awful
Added 6/21/2009

One of the three worst movies I have ever seen. Three strikes:

1. Preposterous plot

2. Poor pacing and direction

3. Kevin Costner (actually he is three strikes all by himself)

Example: Costner calls his Navy buddy and tells him the Mexican Mafia guy's hottie wife is putting the moves on him. Asks his buddy's advice. The buddy (obviously smarter than the lead character) says, "Get out of there while you still have your skin!" Costner says, "Nah, I guess I'll hang around."

I saw this movie while I was on a one-year remote assignment in Korea. I stayed until the end because the bar wasn't open. Just shows what boredom will make you do.
