Plot: Lawrence Kasdan's black comedy about a wife's ultimate revenge against her womanizing husband is based on a true story about the wife of a pizzeria owner who decided to kill her cheating husband. When her attempt to murder him failed, the husband refused to press charges against her because he felt she had done the right thing. Kevin Kline is the pizzeria owner Joey Boca in I Love You to Death. Joey is a smooth Italian lothario, modeled after Marcello Mastroianni, who cheerfully dons his plumbers overalls to repair his female tenants' plumbing in the rental apartments the family owns. Joey feels he is justified in bedding down countless numbers of women because of all the hours he puts in day after day at the pizzeria. Plus, as he tells one of his women friends, I'm a man. I got a lotta hormones in my body. His wife Rosalie (Tracey Ullman) sweetly ignores her husband's philandering -- that is until she visits the public library and sees Joey fondling one of tenants in the book stacks. At first Rosalie considers suicide, but finally, egged on by her mother Nadja (Joan Plowright), she determines that Joey must be the one to face the music. But the people Rosalie hires to do Joey in are of the cut-rate variety and are unsuccessful. They then try to knock Joey off by feeding him barbiturate-laced spaghetti, but also to no avail. Rosalie then enlists pizzeria employee Deco Nod (River Phoenix), who has a crush on Rosalie, to do the job. But even then, they have no luck. As a last resort, they try to hire professionals. What they get instead are two drugged-out junkies -- Harlan (William Hurt) and Marlin (Keanu Reeves) -- who arrive at the home and blast at a slumbering figure in the bedroom. Then, while they report on their progress downstairs, Joey ambles into the living room, very much alive. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

This movie is a laugh out loud film that will keep you in stitches throughout the entire story. The beloved main characters work together so well and each one makes you feel as though you really understand and before you know it, you are so caught up in the drama that you end up laughing your head off. Excellent for anyone who needs a good belly laugh.

Great film!

This is, in my opinion, one of Sally Field's best. Her acting is brilliant, and makes the movie. Perfectly cast, funny, entertaining. You do NOT need to be a fan of soap operas to appreciate the humor!

One of the great romantic comedies
Added 11/18/2008

Comedy is a dicey business. For some, it isn't funny unless it's current and political. To others it's all about how people get along together. Luckily, this movie gives everyone a chance to laugh. While this is a romantic comedy, with all of the usual "boy meets/rejects/gets rejected by/reunites with girl" plots, it is also a timeless look at the business of television, soap operas in particular. The only indication that this movie might not be current is the over-the-top 80s wardrobe.

Also, the cast certainly contributes to the experience. Just watching Robert Downey Jr., Sally Field, Carrie Fisher, Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Shue, Terry Hatcher, Whoopie Goldberg, Garry Marshall and Cathy Moriarty tear up the scenery is a complete treat.

You won't regret owning this one.

Just a really funny movie!

So silly, so funny -- the near-sighted Kevin Kline trying to read his cue cards (bran flavor? brake fluid? brain fever!), Whoopie Goldberg's exasperated writer (what do you mean bring him back? He was de-capitated! How am I going to write for someone without a head?!). Great cast, funny funny movie.

A well acted movie and a heart warming story of redemption, forgiveness, and hope for a lasting second chance.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. It recreates a time perfectly(I should know, I was a young woman during those years). I sincerely wish they would put it out on Blu-ray.
