Plot: Following the surprisingly successful children's fantasy The Neverending Story (1984), this lesser sequel presents the further adventures of the young boy Bastian in the magical land of Fantasia. Bastian (Jonathan Brandis) returns to this kingdom of the imagination, reached through a magical antique book, to escape from his unpleasant life as a social outcast with a distant father. Unfortunately, things aren't so great in Fantasia either, which is under attack by the sorceress Xayide (Clarissa Burt), and Fantasia's young leader soon recruits Bastian to help win the battle for their world. Several memorable creatures return from the first film, including the Rock Biter and the Luck Dragon, and a number of other strange beasts make appearances along the way. However, the plot often relies on stale fairy-tale elements that make the sequel feel substantially less original than the fresh and unexpectedly charming original. However, enough children were entertained by the special effects and the simple story of good-versus-evil for a third installment, The Never Ending Story 3: Escape from Fantasia, to follow three years later. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Feeling like a kid again!

What a flash back! I got this movie as a surprise for my boyfriend who has been wanting to watch this movie for a very long time-but it turns out, our little girl loved it even more than we did! Great family movie!

why did they do this?

i used to watch the first ns like a million times on video cassette. the horse sinking in the mud always made me cry but now i would probably find it funny. when i got an exercise bike i started thinking of all the movies i used to like that i could watch while exercising. this came as a bundle with nsI and it made me want to break the dvd over my knee. or throw it out the window. what makes sequels so painful? i don't know but this one is one of the painfullest. i tried to love it for it's badness. kind of like the way you can love krull or legend. nope. didn't work.

What an exceptional movie. Just as timely as when originally released. Though the special effects are low tech it doesn't detract from the story being told. We all want to go to Fantasia!
