Bring me giants!

Having never read Cyrano before (pardon me while I hang my head in shame) I wasn't familiar with the story. The character, yes -- nearly everyone knows something about the theme of this tale -- but I was terribly uninformed of the greatness of the story. Watching the movie opened up a wonderful world to me. I immediately liked the dashing yet vulnerable, heroic yet fallible, Cyrano. His heart is immense, his courage without reproach, his honor without blemish, and despite the almost superhuman-ness of him he is still a man with a man's weaknesses and fears. Ferrer played Cyrano with an almost fanatical passion, a greatness that the screen barely contains. I found him amazing! At my next trip to the library I borrowed the book and devoured it, discovering that the story and writing are treasures that I only wish I'd encountered years before.
Yes, I'm smitten with Cyrano. He's become a personal hero to me, a man who writes sterling poetry, defends his friends to the death, loves with ferocity, handles a sword as though he were born with one in his hand, serves his king and country nobly, keeps his honor pure throughout his trials, spins fantastical tales with ease, and through it all has a silent and noble strength that never falters. How lucky a man would be to have such a friend, and how fortunate a man would be if he could only BE such a man. Such a man do I endeavor to be.
Buy this movie and the book -- give yourself a treat and relish them both over and over. If you have romance in your soul and courage in your heart you will love Cyrano as I do.

This splendid film was never the best looking movie ever made, being done on a low budget in black and white, but this so-called "enhanced" edition is so badly transferred to disc as to be virtually unwatchable.

movies worth owning
Added 10/8/2009
When you read the play this is taken from and then watch the movie, you can be totally entranced by the fact that they have taken an ok play and made it into a spectacular movie. The character, "Cyrano," has been used in many different forms in other writings, plays and movies over the years. Even Steve Martin did a remake of this for modern times,ROXANNE. Nowhere near as good as the original, but a
remake all the same. This has a moral side to it, besides the falling in love and the war being fought through it, that embodies what true integrity is and how a person makes decisions that always show that side of his character. Truly good for all ages.

Great older, back and white movie. Has comedy and romance. Jose Ferrer is fantastic as Cyrano.

This story of unrequited love passes the test of time

Jose Ferrer is perfect. He makes you laugh and weep with his self-deprecating humor and tragic heartbreak. Even though this is an older movie, the message of true love and sacrifice is relevant today. I had to have this as one of my all-time favorites.

Classic Films Finally Restored
Added 1/24/2008
Cyrano de Bergerac was an early film for Jose Ferrer and it was great one. A swordsman who would compose a poem to his foe and recite it as he fought. Impossible odds were nothing to him. This film has always been a favorite of mine ever since I was a kid watching it on a Saturday afternoon. This copy is a good one. In fact I am sure it is the best on the market and it came out at a time when I had given up any hope of ever having a good copy. I have bought this movie 3 times and gave away the first two copies because they were such bad transfers. But this one is great! And I dont want to leave out the Son of Monte Cristo. Louis Hayward gives a great performance but George Sanders steals the movie in one of his great roles as the villan. Plus, for us baby boomers, Clayton Moore (the Lone Ranger) plays a good guy without his mask. It is nice to see that they are saving some of the old classics. If you are a movie buff and collector, I would highly recommend this copy.
