Plot: Defense attorney Claire Kubik (Ashley Judd) seems to have the perfect life. She has a high profile job at a big firm, a beautiful home outside San Francisco, and a husband, Tom (James Caviezel of The Thin Red Line), who loves her. Claire's biggest problem appears to be that she wants to have a baby, and she's having trouble getting pregnant. But when the police investigate a routine break-in at her home, they uncover the truth about her husband's identity, and her life is thrown into turmoil. Claire finds out that her husband's name is actually Ron Chapman, and that he's an ex-marine accused of murdering seven innocent civilians in El Salvador during a raid in the late '80s. He admits that he was there, and that he changed his identity to escape prosecution for the crimes, but he insists that he's innocent, and that the massacre was committed by another soldier under the orders of a powerful general (Bruce Davison), who is using Ron as a patsy to cover it up. Claire is eventually convinced that Ron's telling the truth. Faced with defending her husband in an unfamiliar military courtroom, Claire enlists the aid of Charles Grimes (Morgan Freeman), an ex-Army judge advocate with an axe to grind. Stonewalled by the military bureaucracy at every turn, they uncover a web of deception and disappearing witnesses, and they soon find their own lives in danger. High Crimes was adapted from Joseph Finder's novel by the husband and wife screenwriting team of Yuri Zeltser and Cary Bickley. The film was directed by Carl Franklin (One False Move), and co-stars Amanda Peet and Adam Scott. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Great classic thriller. Morgan Freeman never disappoints. Nice plot with a twist. Love all movies based on Alex Cross book character.

Slightly Above Average
Added 7/9/2009

Crime story-wise, this was nothing extraordinary but was a pretty solid film. Actor Morgan Freeman does best in films where he's the likable hero-cop. He is definitely that in this film although his character, Alex Cross, is a little too sharp for believability.

There were just a bit too many "oh, come on's" said by me watching this as Cross would get computer passwords with no trouble, etc. The odds of that happening are millions-to-one but not in the world of films. There were other examples, too, of him figuring out things that were almost impossible.

For a tough modern-day crime story this film, for the most part, was pretty low- key with low profanity and not a lot of gore or overdone action. That was surprising considering the sordid subject matter. The tameness in here, and the quality of Freeman's acting, make this a small notch above the average thriller.

Average crime movie.

Good movie to watch, but not really all that engaging. I felt for some of the characters, and the plot was written fairly well--however, nothing about it grabbed me. I ended the film with no excitement, no fear, no feeling whatsoever, really. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but not the best either.

Predictable
Added 10/8/2009

I am a big fan of both Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd and appreciated their fine acting. However, the plot was not very imaginative and the ending entirely predictable. I now own a DVD that I will probably never look at again. But those are the chances one takes when buying a DVD that I had never seen on screen or even on TV before. Sorry, I had hoped it would have been a better "who done it"

Waste of Time

HO HUM! We found the plot and characters to be completely unbelievable. Glad we didn't pay the ticket prices to see it when it first came out as I don't think I could have sat through it. At least being able to check it out from the library, we didn't waste money!
