Plot: Siblings Eric Roberts and Julia Roberts appear in this old-fashioned saga about oppressed Sicilian wine-growers in 19th-century California. Giancarlo Giannini stars as Sebastian Collogero, the robust Italian patriarch who is battling with railroad mogul William Bradford Berrigan (Dennis Hopper) to prevent his land from being taken over by the rail company. Sebastian's spirited son, Marco (Eric Roberts), is in love with Angelica (Lara Harris), the daughter of a rival wine-grower's clan. Marco is not very concerned about the warfare about to erupt between the wine-growers and the railroad until Berrigan's thugs torture and kill Sebastian in front of his daughter Maria (Julia Roberts). Marco then gets his friends together and organizes a revolt against Berrigan and his railroad empire. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

My daughter and I were extras in this movie which was fun. I thought it was a very good. The only part I didn't like was seeing myself on film! If you are interested in another aspect of what occurred during the Gold Rush era, you will like it.

Needs to Make a DVD jump

Pretty good movie, but int this technology, VHS is "dying" days, it need to be put on DVD and I don't know why it's not because many movies that are in earlier years are on DVD, so it's not the year, oh and by the way unlike Marie who thinks "I disagree with Leonard Maltin's opinion that this is a "dreadful film". It's a good film with a good cast; Julia Roberts makes her first film appearance and, to my knowledge, her only appearance with her brother, Eric, a fine actor who is seldom given the credit he deserves. My emotions were stirred by the unjust inflictions suffered by the wine growers. The film was impressive enough to inspire me to check railroad history and learn what I can to determine whether there really were any unscrupulous railroad barons like Dennis Hopper's character; incidentally, he handled the Irish accent very well. ", I know this is not the only appearnce with her brother (although it might of been at the time Maria wrote this) and it is definetly not the first movie Julia was in Mystic Pizza, Baja Oklahoma, Satisfaction, and Firehouse (Firehouse being the first although if you don't count un-credited then it's Satisfaction) were before Blood Red.... apology I realised that the other person meant "movie not as realsed but first acting experiance which is blood red. I meant it as released because this movie wasn't released until after she became more know (after Mystic Pizza) my apologies to Marie for taking "movie" a little to literal. Note again that I thought she meant only movie where her brother was there but she meant starred it which is true, however he was on set (and maybe extra---not sure) during Grand Champion which is the movie his daughter Emily Roberts was in

You'll fight for the characters!

This is a story of a man who has imigrated from a foreign country only to find his land is being sought after by a dirty businessman who wants to put a railroad through it for his own benefit. Eric Roberts plays the son who fights for his right to deny access to his family's land. It's a predictable movie that leaves you wanting someone to re-write the ending.
