Plot: Despite its relative failure at the box office, this is a worthwhile thriller from the director of Bonnie and Clyde. Mary Steenburgen stars as an actress, Katie McGovern, lured to the upstate New York cabin of crazy Dr. Joseph Lewis (Jan Rubes), a diabolical crippled shrink playing a blackmail game with the ruthless sister of a recently murdered woman, who happened to be a dead ringer for Katie. Lewis and his creepy assistant (Roddy McDowall) keep Katie captive, videotaping her and cutting off her finger to further their sordid plot, while she tries desperately to get away. As the title implies, Arthur Penn gets a lot of atmosphere out of the remote cabin and a raging blizzard, and the cast is terrific. It all falls apart eventually, but is quite gripping until the required histrionics in the silly final reel. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Great acting by Mart Steenberger. she is able go from one character to another. There great pacing to the story. the opening scene sets the stage.

Intriguing, but...

I found the acting, directing, atmosphere, and some of the writing excellent. It is loaded with suspense and surprises. The story is fascinating--an actress supposedly being hired by a movie company to play a role, but in reality she really has been hired to be murdered by someone who needs to kill her. The plot is sometimes difficult to follow. And the screenplay has many plot holes which make the story hardly believable. Because of the excellent direction and acting, the plot holes becomes noticable mainly after the movie ends. You then realize how illogically the characters have been acting and how preposterous this contrived story is. Still, it has its fun moments.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, this is a movie for you. It isn't a slasher flick. It is a classic scary movie that has a surprising twist. Mary Steenbergen is great! It's the perfect movie to watch on a snowy, cold day. I watched it years ago, and I have looked for it at several video rental stores, but never had any luck. I was thrilled to find it on amazon.com. Be sure you get the right "Dead of Winter." There are two, and I can't recommend the other one, I haven't seen it.

Colorful characters, excellent acting, an exciting plot, good scenery, and the actors are easy on the eyes. No excess of violence or foul language detracted from this film. It offered several big surprises and the plot was not confusing. This is a movie I was able to watch more than once and invite friends over to see.

Chilling - perfect for a January night....

I remember seeing this movie on HBO when I was just a teenager. I remember being freaked out by the "finger" scene.

The basic plot is that this down-on-her-luck actress goes to an audition and is chosen to play the part of another actress who the producer says can no longer fulfill her role - that she went mad.

The producer entices the starving actress to come to northern New York state for a screen test at the director's house. As it turns out, the producer and director are frauds. They are really looking to blackmail a wealthy woman whose sister they had been in cahoots with - the wealthy woman had her sister murdered to keep quiet about another murder, and, well, they had to find someone who looked like the dead sister to convince the wealthy sister that she was still alive - therefore to get even more money. The plot is semi-confusing, unless you are sitting there watching the movie.

I love Mary Steenburgen in this movie, playing triple roles. And Roddy McDowall is also awesome, and uber-creepy. The only reason this movie gets 4-stars from me is from its obvious cheesiness, which is only plot-driven, not the actors themselves.

My favorite thing about the movie is the scenic setting in upstate NY.

Good movie to watch on a cold January night. It's not terribly frightening; just interesting and a bit odd.
