Plot: Perhaps it was his collaborator Shel Silverstein who said to screenwriter David Mamet Lighten up. Do a comedy. Whatever the case, Things Change was a welcome change of pace for Mamet, both as scenarist and director. Don Ameche also goes against his usual grain by playing a downtrodden Chicago shoeshine boy (if one can call an 80-year-old a boy) who is arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Not having much of a future anyway, Ameche has agreed--for a hefty sum--to take the rap for a gangland rubout. Mob henchman Joe Mantegna is assigned to keep an eye on Ameche over the weekend to make sure he doesn't try to weasel out of his agreement. Mantegna has been ordered to remain in Ameche's Lake Tahoe hotel, but the young guy takes a liking to the old loser. Like Jack Nicholson in The Last Detail, Mantegna takes Ameche on one last fling around Nevada. The location photography is terrific, and Ameche even more so. One would like Things Change to be equally as good, and while it never comes up to its potential, it remains a pleasant means to while away 100 minutes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A wonderful beautiful story, a lovely mix of drama and comedy and a few surprises.
And Don Ameche as always gave a classy role as a senior shoe shine man.
And Joe Mantegna as a kind bumbling torpedo is great.

Mamet strikes out

This is a beautifully filmed and well acted waste of time. The problem is with the script: it falters about half way through and in the end dies completely. The film is not, as advertised, a comedy. It's a fantasy about Chicago mobsters and a shoe shine man (Don Ameche) who is little livelier and more interesting than a scarecrow. The story is so poorly done that at one point the main gangster character steals a car by hot wiring it to take him and the scarecrow from Lake Tahoe to Chicago. Along the way they stop at a gas station, and there are now keys in the car, which are taken by an attendant in lieu of payment. Apparently hours later, the two men are back in Chicago. This after the gangster had left his jacket behind with the airline tickets. The worst part is the utterly absurd ending. I can imagine even art theater audiences, devoted to Mamet and "fillum," groaning if not booing.

This movie did nothing for me. It was slow, dull & uninteresting. And definitely NOT FUNNY.

There's nothing wrong with a feel-good movie if it's well made.

Easily one of the most memorable films I have ever seen, and in a strictly positive way; this one will without a doubt leave you with a warm feeling in your heart. See it, and then spread the word...your friends will be grateful.
