Plot: So how far would you go to win a beauty pageant? That's the burning question of Drop Dead Gorgeous, in which the citizens of Mount Rose, Minnesota gear up for the year's biggest event, the Sarah Rose Miss Teen Princess America Pageant, in which Becky Leeman (Denise Richards) and Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst) are the contestants to beat. Becky's mother Gladys (Kirstie Alley), a former beauty queen herself, has instilled in her daughter a drive to succeed at any cost. And Gladys will do anything to help Becky's chances of success. Amber's mother Annette (Ellen Barkin) is devoted to her daughter but drinks, smokes, and swears like a sailor. And while Amber is ambitious and a skilled beautician (a talent that she uses in her part-time job at the local mortuary), her view of the pageant is pragmatic: while boys can get sports scholarships, this pageant may be her only ticket out of town. However, Amber and the other contestants may have underestimated just how badly Becky wants to win -- or just how good she is with a gun. Drop Dead Gorgeous was directed by Michael Patrick Jann, a founding member of the sketch comedy group The State (who had their own series on MTV), and written by Lorna Williams, a veteran of the beauty pageant circuit who claims that nearly everything in the film is based on an actual incident. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Yep you read it right. This movie is so funny and I enjoyed it so much over the years that I plan on buying a second copy since my first dvd is getting a little scratched. When I pull this movie out to watch with friends at first they don't think much about it but after the intro with Adam West, they get intrigued after the first ten minutes they're hooked.
If had to whittle down my collection of DVDs to only 100, this one would surely make the cut.

Great comedy!

Drop Dead Gorgeous, though not subtle, is a cleverly written comedy in the "mockumentory" style of "This is Spinal Tap." However, it lampoons many of the slightly (or not so slightly) absurd aspects of both beauty pageants and living in white mid-west suburbia. The role of a spoiled, snotty, self-absorbed teen princess holy roller isn't so much a role for Dennis Richards (well, everything but the holy roller part) as a biography. Kirsten Dunst comes through with a stellar performance as preppy underdog, and Kirsten Alley is quite entertaining as the rich, overbearing mother reliving her glory days through her daughter. Entertaining from beginning to finsh!

This Movie Is Hilarious!

This is one of those barely seen old school, beauty queen spoof, movies that most missed out on back in the day! It is hilarious and if you like Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards and the movie "FARGO", you'll love this one! This is just a feel good comedy that you can laugh at with others who have a sense of humor.

Cult family favorite

This is a movie that we (my 3 grown daughters) and I like to watch from time to time for the one-liners. It makes fun of beauty pageants, the Midwest, small town politics, you name it, the gloves are off on this one. If you are looking for oscar-worthy performances, look somewhere else. If you are looking for low-brow laughs and an all around good time, look no further.

Best Comedy EVER!

A lot of people will not agree with my title for this review, but that is only based on my opinion because it is most definitely my fav ever. I absolutely LOVE this movie, and can quote it until I'm blue in the face. Whenever I have a bad day, I know popping in this DVD will just get me ROFL soon enough!
