Cheesy, but surprisingly entertaining.

The Marine is a no holds barred action vehicle filled with cardboard characters and a plot straight out of an episode of the 1980's G.I. Joe cartoon. Yeah, there are plot holes, logic bombs and more cheesy dialogue than Kraft could put in a dozen commercials, but this doesn't stop the movie from being a lot of fun to watch.
WWE wrestling superstar John Cena plays John Triton, a U.S. Marine who has been scapegoated and dishonorably discharged for disobeying an order from commanding officers and is making an adjustment to civilian life with his hot wife. He gets a job at a security firm where...he gets fired for disobeying an order. After this mishap he and his wife decide to go away where at a gas station they run afoul of some diamond smugglers who kill a cop and kidnap take his wife for a hostage so they can make their getaway. In the quest to get her back, Triton goes through car chases, explosions, and death defying scenarios. It's best not to take these too seriously; this is the kind of action movie where you turn your brain off and enjoy the show.
Despite the logic holes, The Marine reminds me of the kind of old-fashioned action movie I used to watch back in the late 1980's-1990's like American Ninja or Ninja III: The Domination (WHY ISN'T THIS ON DVD YET!) Low budget movies that were full of over the top stunts, car chases, big explosions and cliché lines from the heroes. The kind of movie you turn your brain off for two hours and unwind with. The kind of movies I'd watch on a Saturday afternoon when I had nothing else to do
John Cena is fun to watch as Triton, he has great charisma and a strong screen presence that keeps you watching in spite of the campy script. He shows the potential to be a solid B-action star in the not unlike Michael Dudikoff or Michael Pare. Kelly Carson is good as Triton's wife. She does the best she can with the weak script she's given. Robert Patrick takes his character way over the top The rest of the cast here is fodder for Triton to kill or beat up.
If you catch this on TV one Saturday afternoon, after you've done the shopping or are coming back from a late night date don't miss it. The Marine is the perfect movie to kill some time or catch for a nightcap.

Surprisingly enjoyable!

Yes, the plot is paper-thin and fairly ridiculous, but for a fun, mindless, action romp, this film delivers. John Cena is quite good and natural as an actor, and Robert Patrick is always great. There was some very funny dialogue as the film did seem to be spoofing the entire genre. And it is always funny to watch the hero emerge from non-stop brutal fights and blazing infernos with scarcely a hair out of place.

Stunningly Horrible!
Added 8/6/2009
I really wanted to like this movie, honest I did. It's got all of my requirements: manly man, action, things that go boom, and a hot chick. That's a recipe for success, right? I mean, how can it not be?
Was I ever so wrong.
At one point Cena is hit in the chest with a sledge hammer and merely rolls over, grunts, and continues fighting. He was hit with a SLEDGE HAMMER! I've nailed my finger with a regular hammer and been incapacitated for days. The craptastic nature of this *film* simply cannot be expressed in words... Perhaps a melodramatic self-serving story? Yes, that will do...
When I was 16 I was gainfully employed at the local video store. It was no BlockBuster, but we did a brisk business. I thought I ruled the world because I had a car, a girl, and exactly four whiskers on my chin. I rocked. After payday I would pick her up from the trailer park, take her to McDonalds, and then impress her with my knowledge of fractions.
Anywhoo,
Whoever was manning the front desk, where the checkout registers were, got the honor of choosing the movie to be played over all six of the store's televisions (as long as it wasn't a pornographic title). Usually this meant we'd watch low budget indie or foreign action films. Of course I always chose "Just one of the guys" because the chick playing the dude flashes the other dude the chick who's playing the dude is into (yeah, that movie is a little confusing) - but more importantly, brief nudity for the price of a PG-13.
In any event, one evening the assistant manager of the store (who was later charged with murder... long story) brought in a film from Japan. It featured the usual fare - people doing weird and wacky stuff. However, during one vignette the camera focuses on the rear of a nude man. The man proceeds to wrap is butt in see-through cellophane wrap and moments later he soils that wrap. This movie is EXACTLY like that scene. It's uncanny...

EXTREMELY Disappointed
Added 7/28/2009
I'm a Cena fan, so there was no question whether I had to get this or not. I'm extremely disappointed with what I got. It's sort of boring, actually. I guess some parts were okay, but mostly it was just some fights before Cena saved his wife. If you want something better, read the book, or if you don't like to read (can't blame you) watch 12 Rounds-it's much better.
