Plot: John Schlesinger directed this fact-based drama - adapted from Robert Lindsay's bestseller of the same title -- about two Californians, friends since boyhood, who are caught selling government secrets to the Soviet Union. Christopher Boyce (Timothy Hutton) is an all-American boy, studying for the priesthood in a seminary. But Boyce decides to drop out of school, and with the help of his father (Pat Hingle), a FBI agent, he gets a job working for the CIA in a message-routing center. While reading the messages, Boyce is shocked to learn that the CIA is involved in fixing Australian elections. Watching the Watergate hearings on television, he feels an ever-mounting sense of outrage at the arrogance of the U.S. government and decides to do something about it. Deciding to supply the CIA messages to the Russians, he enlists his childhood friend Daulton Lee (Sean Penn) to help him. Lee is to deliver the CIA secrets to a Russian operative (David Suchet) at the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City. But Lee is an unreliable drug dealer, and his sloppy spy trail leads the two old friends into more trouble than they bargained for. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

An idealistic young man leaves the Catholic seminary and his retired Dad, a former FBI employe, gets him a job with a company which provides equipment and resources to the National Security Agency and the CIA. The young man loses faith in the USA when he comes to believe his country is misusing its powers to undermine democratically elected governments, such as Allende's Chile. The catayst for his turning is the sacking of the Australian Whitlam Govt in November 1975. He starts selling classified info using his drug using buddy as courier. It all goes wrong. THey both get gaoled for a VERY long time. Sean Penn is great. Lyle Mays sound track is good. Worth a watch. Based on a true story.

Why did they do it

I really liked this movie. I wish it explored deeper into what made Christopher Boyce want to commit treason. Seemed a little light in that area. Nevertheless, excellant performances by all the actors especially Sean Penn. It didn't seem like a stretch for him to portray a doped out loser since he just finished Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Amazing how he's become one of the great actors of our time.

Two close boyhood friends grow up and apart. One gets hired at a government agency that is responsible for encryption technology. The other turns into a smalltime hood, drug addict. Disillusioned with his work and life, one begins to sell government secrets to the soviets via his drug addicted friend. The story gets interesting as the drug addicted friend self destructs. This movie has a fantastic soundtrack and the acting is top level. I recommend it with 5 stars.
