Plot: The glorious Hollywood institution of the romantic comedy gets raked over the coals in this broad parody of any number of boy-meets-girl flicks. Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) is a young woman who wants nothing more than to find the man of her dreams and settle down. However, Julia has a rather serious weight problem that prevents her from making a positive impression on people. Determined to find love at all costs, Julia somehow drops the weight and meets Grant Fonckyerdoder (Adam Campbell), a handsome and charming Englishman who falls head over heels for her. Julia and Grant waste no time in setting the date, but until they make their way to the altar they have to deal with meddling parents, flaky wedding planners, fights over the right wedding dress, vertically challenged romantic advisors, and Andy (Sophie Monk), a longtime friend of Grant, who isn't so happy to hear he's getting hitched. Also featuring Fred Willard, Jennifer Coolidge, Eddie Griffin, and Tony Cox, Date Movie was written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, proudly billed as two of the six writers of Scary Movie. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Surprisingly a Good Parody Movie
Added 6/28/2009

I wasn't expecting much at all but this is surprisingly one of the better of the recent parody movies. Alyson Hannigan shows she has some real comedic talent. I love her as Lily in How I met Your Mother but she doesn't get to show just how funny she is, especially with physical comedy such as wearing the fat suit in this one. She's long been the sidekick in movies and other TV shows as well such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer but shows with this she can play the leading role. I hope she keeps making How I Met Your Mother but I hope she gets more opportunities like this to be the leading comedy actor in future projects as she has talent I'd never realised she had before.

Some of the films this movie parodies scenes from are, Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, Pretty Woman, When Harry Met Sally, What Women Want, Kill Bill, Dodge Ball, Hitch, Shallow Hal, Book of Fate, Jerry Mcguire, Wedding Crashers, Mr and Mrs Smith, Lord of the Rings and King Kong.

The parody character of Jinx the cat (from Meet the Parents) steals this movie though, watch it for his appearances alone.

Romance comedy spoof
Added 11/3/2008

It was an ok movie. I'm just saying what i think, but they needed a girl who wasn't flat as a board for the main girl, just sayin'. A good comedy, i'd definetly watch it again. Loved the Napoleon Dynamite spoof at the begining. I say see it, especially if you like romantic comedies.

A very, very bad movie

I recently witnessed this car crash of a movie. I usually like parodys but this movie was boring and unfunny.

The ads proudly state "From 2 of the 6 writers of Scary Movie". Need another reason not to see it?

The writers of this movie thought that referencing dozens of different movies would make a comedy. No. There has to be jokes, funny jokes. There needs to be something humorously said about the original films to make it a satire. I have seen many of the films this movie "spoofs" including Napoleon Dynamite, When Harry Met Sally, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Wedding Planner, Jerry Maguire, Sleepless in Seattle, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and ALL of them are funnier than Date Movie. It really is pointless to spoof comedies. The writers don't even reference date movies all the time. They reference King Kong, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and it doesn't work. Even the so-so Scary Movie films have something to say about the films they are spoofing. Not only was it terribly unfunny, it was sick. I like Monty Python and American Pie but when a cat starts humping a decayed human torso I draw the line.
The writers of this film also made Epic Movie. I saw Date Movie on DVD. I will not see Epic Movie ever or any other film made by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. It is a sad time in our world and an extremely small part of that sadness is the fact that movies like these are made and make millions at the box office.

NOT AS BAD AS I FEARED, BUT STILL... 4.5 OUT OF 10

I was still willing to give this film a chance, even after seeing the abomination called Disaster Movie (Unrated Widescreen), from the talentless hacks Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (They need to be banned from making films). While Date Movie seems like a masterpiece compared to the horrendous Disaster Movie, it still sucked. This film was nothing more than a boring romantic comedy, with several spoofs of better films thrown in. You have much better comedy options to choose than this.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: A girl named Julia Jones is an ugly fat chick no one wants, who is seeking love in all the wrong areas, until she gets liposuction from a guy who is supposed to be spoofing Will Smith's character from Hitch (Widescreen Edition) and a crew of people supposed to be spoofing the show Pimp My Ride. She then competes in a show that makes fun of Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire? and wins the love of the handsome British man she falls in love with. But when her fiancee's ex shows up and threatens to destroy the wedding, Julia must stop this ex from ruining the plans.
MUSIC: The music does fit the romantic comedy theme, and it is pretty good. They even threw in some songs from other romantic comedies. However, in this day and age, the Milkshake song has gotten old and tiresome.
ACTING: Most of these actors aren't necessarily bad, but they get dragged down by too many bad jokes and spoofs. The dialogue can also get on your nerves with too much annoying sexual humor and racial slurs.
ACTION: Most of the spoofs are boring or just plain awful. The spoofs get boring because they overkill the jokes, and ruin them. The bad spoofs include the spoof of Kill Bill and wasted every opportunity to make a fun spoof out of that. There are also spoofs of Napoleon Dynamite as well as a few others, but I won't get into that because this film rips far too many films to want to list.
OVERALL: You and your date are better off watching an actual good romantic comedy instead. This film isn't worth your time or money especially when you look at review score averages (6% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). This film isn't torturous like Disaster Movie, it's just boring and uninspired.
THE GOOD: Some funny spoofs, good music, and decent actors.
THE BAD: Too many awful or boring spoofs, no original ideas of its own, and bad dialogue.

Date Movie

>Very funny! Made in awfully poor taste, just what I like. It absolutely spoofs other movies and television shows to death, leaving one to wonder where can it all end; what with so much ridiculous imitating of other productions going on, it barely has time to follow it's own storyline or plot. Some scenes are just plain gross, in the direct-in your face style that shocks and violates all of your six senses-which more often than not-repels, rather than sets one's affections for the eventual wedding couple;
(let alone any other members of the cast)...However, it is hilarious and over the top, with nonstop ludicrous scene after scene-complete with a happy ending for the two young lovers that none of us would really want to know or meet up with anywhere. If I did I would RUN!-Kevin Griffin...
