Plot: A boy learns life-changing lessons about the importance of friendship and the dignity of labor in this adventure saga based on a story by Rudyard Kipling. Young Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) is the working definition of a spoiled brat; the only child of a wealthy widowed businessman, Harvey has everything he needs, but never stops asking for more, convinced he can get anything if he yells, pouts, or throws the right tantrum. Even other boys his age are disgusted with his antics, and when he accompanies his father on an ocean cruise, he finds he has no friends to play with. After wolfing down six ice-cream sodas, Harvey gets sick to his stomach and while vomiting over the side of the ship, he falls into the drink. He is rescued by Manuel (Spencer Tracy), a Portuguese old salt who drags him on board a Gloucester fishing boat where he's a deck hand and doryman. Harvey shows no gratitude to Manuel for saving his life and demands to be taken home immediately; Manuel and the crew, not the least bit sympathetic, inform him that once they've filled the ship's hold with fresh catch, they'll return to shore, and not a moment sooner. Over the next few weeks, Harvey grows from a self-centered pantywaist into a young man who appreciates the value of a hard day's work, and in Manuel he finds the strength, guidance, and good sense that he never got from his father. Spencer Tracy earned an Academy Award for his performance in Captains Courageous and even sings a bit; the story was parodied years later (with a few rather drastic changes) in the Chris Elliott vehicle Cabin Boy. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

An all-time great!

I hadn't seen this film for many years, and my last memory was that this was a very good film I enjoyed when I was young. Well, after re-watching this recently, I was reminded that this is a tremendous film that really packs a punch.

I have seen some criticism about the changing of Kipling's classic and also about the poor Portuguese accent Tracy had. All I can say is, that is not nearly enough of a detractor for a nearly perfect film! I've seen a lot of dramas and a lot of melodramas. I don't know exactly what makes one movie great and another pretentious, but this movie is just fantastic. Perhaps Kipling would be slightly disappointed with some of the minor plot changes, but I don't think even he would be disappointed with the character and moral of the movie.

This is a true "coming of age" film, where a selfish, arrogant rich kid learns how to live for others and grows up quickly under the care and discipline of people who truly care for him. The message doesn't age--even if the setting does--and I would not hesitate to watch this brilliant film again soon. I would also recommend this highly to others--unless their idea of a coming of age film is that of a sex comedy.

Exciting movie -- beautiful format

Although somewhat dated, "Captains" is still moving, and most of the ship shots aren't stock footage or miniatures -- Fleming shot a real ship, off the coast of California. The cast is excellent (who knew John Carradine was so handsome when young?), and, despite an accent stolen from Chico Marx, Spencer Tracy is powerful, as usual.

Film seems to have been restored for the DVD; it's in excellent shape. Extras include MGM shorts and a cartoon.

This story was written in the late 1800's and filmed in the 1930s. It is a classic story by an excellent and famous writer and the film is well acted and directed. The Scenes and technical production is very impressive especially for the time it was done. I recommend it to you no matter what your age and I wish it could be seen by all school children.

Spencer Tracy plays this part with a comic edge that frustrates poor Bartholomew when Spencer in one scene while the two are in the life boat and he makes up tunes on the fly.

Cracks me up. You'd swear Spencer ad-libbed it with his style.

This movie will always be a favorite, but another is Spencer as Thomas Edison.
