Plot: Director Tom Tykwer followed up his international hit Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) with this drama, which also examines young people living on the edges of the law. Sisi (Franka Potente) is an attractive but withdrawn woman who works in a psychiatric clinic, while Bodo (Benno Fürmann) is looking to make some quick money after his recent release from the army. Bodo robs a gas station and is fleeing on foot when he accidentally causes Sisi to be hit by a truck. Realizing she's seriously injured, Bodo comes to Sisi's rescue and performs an emergency tracheotomy on her before he escapes again. Sisi, who is often pursued by men but shies away from their advances, finds that she longs to meet the mysterious Bodo again, and eventually tracks him down to a hideout he shares with his brother, Walter (Joachim Krol). Bodo and Walter angrily send Sisi away, but she unexpectedly encounters them when they pull a robbery at a bank where she's running an errand. Bodo and Walter are caught in a shoot-out with police, and Sisi helps to spirit Bodo away to the clinic where she works, trying to spare him the grim news that Walter was killed in the melee. In addition to serving as writer and director, Tom Tykwer also composed the musical score for The Princess and the Warrior in collaboration with Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Fantastic love story!! I love the awkwardness in the characters and their understanding of each others pain. *sigh*

This one gets better even after several viewings...subtle, enchanting, redemptive, dream-like...the elements all fit together to render a beautiful and touching tale. The other reviewers have covered much of the story already. Great film!

Unraveling the Hidden Connections Between the Princess and the Warrior.
Added 3/29/2008

The Princess and the Warrior (Der Krieger und die Kaiserin) (2000) reunites German director Tom Tykwer with actress Franka Potente from the 1988 film Run Lola Run ((Lola rennt), a film that established Tykwer as a true artist and Potente as a leading actress. Like Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior is a rare artistic experience in film, and much like the films of acclaimed Polish director Krzysztof Kieaelowski (The Decalogue; The Double Life of Veronique), the film explores the premise that there are patterns in life connecting some people. Set in Wuppertal, Germany, the film tells the story of a sweet-natured psychiatric nurse, Sissi (Potente), and a bank robber named Bodo (Benno Furmann in his film debut), whose lives intersect following an accident, in which Bodo saves Sissi's life after she is run over by a truck. After Bodo disappears, Sissi's near-death experience convinces her that she has met the love of her life, though Bodo is convinced he is not that man. Bodo has never fully recovered from his wife's suicide. Sissi dreams that they are as intimately interconnected as "brother and sister, father and mother, husband and wife." The film's dénouement is nothing less than astonishing. This film will appeal to anyone who enjoyed Run Lola Run.

This movie was recomended to me by a very close friend. This DVD is a great way to watch it.

I'd always wondered if there wasn't something new in the world like Run Lola Run, yet to be discovered. It's a very powerful love story about two broken people, and how they put it all together. It's quite powerful, heavy with the ripe of fruit of metaphor.
