Katherine Ross Is Excellant
Added 1/24/2009
This picture hit movie theaters on September 17th 1980 starring the lovely Katherine Ross as Sammy Garrett, Bo Hopkins as Will Garrett and Candy Clark as J.R. Patterson. The movie opens with Sammy and her husband Will at arriving at the rodeo getting ready to compete. Sammy goes looking for her mother who's also involved in rodeo to borrow a scarf. Her mother gives her the white one and Sammy tells her that's it's perfected. Sammy approaches Will wanting a new barrel riding horse so she can improve her chances at winning. Later in the day Will goes bull riding when he's flip and cracks three ribs. The next day Sammy is out by the barn practicing roping a cow's head trying to improve her chances of winning in the roping the calf part of the rodeo. While sitting at the table Sammy tells Will that she wants to take her chances at riding wild horses in the rodeo. She wants for just one time to feel the excitement of being on top of the wild horse and coming out of that gate. Enters Sammy's best friend and fellow rodeo rider herself, J.R. Patterson, who ask Sammy if she would be her partner in the Women Rodeo Association. Now according to J.R. they would be doing this only on the weekend's, however as they continue to climb in standings they start to take on more and more events. Being gone every weekend is starting to get on Will nerves and to make matters worst Sammy gets some news from the doctor that throws a monkey wrench into her entire plans. The questions you need to get answers to are 1. Does Sammy get the chance to become a champion and 2 will it cause her to loose her marriage in the process. This movie was inspired by real life rodeo world champion Sue Pirtle. Now a few thoughts of my own about this movie. I loved this movie right from the start because it kept your interest through out the entire movie. Any movie that has cows in it would get my attention. However, there's was something more about this movie and that was Katherine Ross. I don't think you could've found a better leading lady to this role. Katherine was breath taking in this movie with not only her talent but her beauty also. You could tell that Katherine was determined to make this work just by the way she worked to become the champion she was hoping to be. Based on Katherine Ross performance alone in this picture I g8ive this movie 10 weasel stars.

Rodeo Girl
Added 9/9/2008
Katherine Ross is an asset to any movie and she steals your heart in this movie. If you love Rodeo you will love this movie. I recently purchased it. I first saw it as a made for television movie and was glad to see it available for home use. It is one of the more accurate portrayals of traveling down the road.

Could have been good, but falls short.

This movie could have been good, as it is interesting how a rodeo girl struggles to become a champion. Unfortunately, it has kind of a "B" movie feel to it. As the lines are delivered rather flatly and the acting is lacking some spark. It also dwells too much on the lead's difficult relationship with her husband. On the one hand, it does show the having a family versus having a career dilemna that pretty much every girl faces at some point in her life. And it shows the very traditional male's mindset of what he expects in a wife. So it would be a good movie for a gender studies class or women's history course. However, as far as leisure watching is concerned, I was the only one who finished the movie. The other's with me, who were watching it fell asleep.
On a side note, the lead movie star is quite an attractive actress.
