I don't remember if this movie was critically aclaimed or not (somehow doubt it) but it has all the right stuff to make it one of your favorites. I highly recommend it,

Good Humor Movie

I love movies that make me laugh and this one did. Harvey Keitel was great and very funny. Cameron Diaz was good too, though I fail to see her "beauty". To me she is very average looking, but good at being ditzy when acting. I never liked Keitel until I saw this movie. It was a movie like "When Bad Things Happen", Diaz having been in that one with Christian Slater, but this one was comedy and irony whereas "When Bad Things Happen" (I hope I have that title correct) was irony and serious. I will watch this one again. Worth the price.

Good movie; Great opening theme

I recall "Head Above Water" as an amusing farce. It wasn't/isn't really what could be called personal best work for Harvey Keitel, Cameron Diaz or any of the supporting players (Okay, okay-- Billy Zane's assured turn as Diaz's conniving ex-lover was an enjoyable hoot), but it was definitely a pleasant way to spend a quiet afternoon, when it debuted on premium cable some years back.
I therefore give it four stars for those reasons and two more: Diaz is drop-dead ravishing (pun intended; sorry) as the ditzy, increasingly beleaguered Natalie, and Shawn Colvin's winning, winsome reading of "Sail On Sailor," played over the opening credits, perfectly complements the gorgeous scenery and Natalie's loopy dilemmas.
I've been searching without success so far for Colvin's recording of "Sailor", by the way. Anyone here have any ideas where I can find it?

The movie is good but a little out there. It was delivered timely and it was exactly what I ordered.

"I only eat the best sausage, so I keep it in the best box" - Harvey K. explaining why he keeps sausage in a cigar box.

As I'm in S.Korea and the cable programming is quite unpredictable I've had the misfortune of coming across this movie about 10 times in the last month. It is rather pitiful. I always watch about ten or twenty minutes and then turn away then turn back, so i've seen the entire thing, though in bits and pieces. Billy Zane is simply dislikeable, the setting is weirdly depressing and claustrophobic (maybe intential?), despite being by the ocean, and there's simply too many shots of Harvey K. in short kahki shots mouthing awful dialogue. Diaz is obviously just starting to learn how to act natural in front of a camera and her awkwardness is stunting. I can't believe I'm reviewing this. jesus...the guy who plays the neighbor is unbearably dull and difficult to watch by the way...makes me think of beach wood, dull, lifeless beach wood... The most disturbing scene is when the neighbor guy is gonna make some breakfast - the eggs and sausage thing, the whole atmosphere is just weird, but not in an interesting or appealing way. did i mention billy zane is minced and mixed into a set of concrete stairs? it's just not good.
