This movie is a one of a kind experience in that it is interesting, educational, entertaining, and exciting, something most movies try to accomplish and normally do not achieve. The quality of acting, singing, and directing, choreography, everything is top notch. Yes it is a departure from the equally entertaining stage version it is something that trancends film and gives you that theatrical feeling without being taken direct from broadway. The quick pacing that makes modern movie musicals great is evident and maybe orgiginated with Cabaret, one of the greatest musicals, and movies of all time.

One great musical

I had not seen "Cabaret" since it first came out, and so I wondered how it would survive after all this time. I need not have worried. It is a classic, with some truly shattering performances. Joel Grey is amazing as this kind of ambivalent court jester who comments on history, sociology and human foibles by his presentations in the Kit Kat Club. It is at the same time witty, decadent and horrific. It is one of those performances which one remembers through one's life, as is Liza Minelli's. If ever an Oscar was deserved it was this one. Ms Minelli manages to create in her rendering of Sally Bowles an image of the thirties and at the same time producing a person of depth with an underlying tragedy who gains our complete sympathy while we deplore her life style. It is a beautiful performance. I think if I was to produce a "must see" shortlist "Cabaret" would be right in there.Bob Fosse directed some wonderful, if disturbing , works of great power.

This movie is just a classic, one of the few, or maybe the only one picture that talks about the Weigmar Republic in Germany before the Nazis, but more important the decadence of a nation with a mask of entertainment, Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey are great in their performances, I recomend this movie 100%.

An absolute gem.

"Liza with a z" is one of the best performances by anyone that i've ever seen. I was a fan of Liza's mother Judy Garland long before I became very interested in Liza. When I would think of Liza I would think of her as the daughter of Judy and I had only a vague idea of who she really was. Seeing this changed all that and I became an immediate big Liza fan and then I gained respect for her as a truly fine performer in her own right. From start to finish she has an almost captivating presence on the stage and a strong connection with her audience. Even watching this old film on an old tv in my living room it can be seen even before the show begins that there is a certain excitment and energy in the air which I have come to find out is something characteristic of Liza's shows in general. Liza comes waltzing on to the stage looking grand decked out in white attire and her first song "Yes I Can" begins. Correct me if this not the actual title of the song. I dont know the titles of the songs as I taped this off of tv, so I am only guessing at what the titles are. The titles of the songs become quite irrevelant though when seen in light of the performance. I will not do a song by song review of each number but without exception every one of them is an absolute gem. Favorites from the show are all of them but in particular, "My Mammy" is very very good Liza's vocals on that song are like the sun shining down from the sky, also very very good is "Blackbird", in mentioning this song I feel it is important that I also give alot of credit to the background singers/dancers all of whom are great, they arent listed in the credits which is a bit of a shame. The choreography, costumes, and orchestration were all wonderful. Also wonderful in the show are the songs "I Gotcha", "Mabey this Time", "Cabaret", "Son of a Preacherman". I now undersand what all the fuss is about Liza now that I've bothered to sit down and really watch her, some people use the word legend when talking about Liza. I feel that after decades of giving dazzling performances on stage since the 60's, Liza like her mother became a legend of the stage. It is also important to note that Liza is a fine film actress also but I think she truly shines on the stage in front of an audience and she truly shines. I will close this review by saying that if you like music like this which is orchestrated and tells stories as many of the songs do then this is a wonderful film to get. For anyone who has seen one of Liza's movies and is more interested in what she is like on stage then this is a wonderful place to start. Thank You.

The Best TV Concert Ever!
Added 10/5/2009

My wife and I got married the same year of this concert: LIZA WITH A Z. It was one of the first things we watched together on TV as a married couple so it has extra special significance for us. We were (and continue to be) big fans of Liza Minnelli. It started with me in the 60s: I was an usher at the Alvin Theatre on Bway (now renamed the Neil Simon) when Minnelli had her first Bway triumph in FLORA THE RED MENACE. I was amazed how at each and every performance, she gave 100% and even when the show was winding down and not drawing big crowds (it was a terribly underrated show for its time), Liza still performed as though she were appearing in front of the Queen at Buckingham Palace. What a pro! We then followed her career from her sensational concert at the Winter Garden to her nightclub appearances at the Waldorf-Astoria, to her stepping in for an ailing Gwen Verdon in CHICAGO to her unusual but no less brilliant musical/cabaret show THE ACT.
LIZA WITH A Z is a truly outstanding TV Concert. In terms of music selection, art direction, choreography, etc. it is a marriage of the some of the greatest pros in the theatre at that time. It was a time of everyone who was involved being at the pinnacle of their talents. It is doubtful that we will ever see another concert made for TV (as opposed to a concert performed live in a giant stadium somewhere and then filmed or taped for television) that is quite as excellent in every department at LIZA WITH A Z. It's a genuine treat to be able to sit back after all these years and watch this concert and realize that they still haven't done it better since! It's still the best!

NBC TELEVISION HAS THE GREATEST LIVE CONCERT IN TELEVISION HISTORY
Added 8/31/2009

Liza Minnelli is an amazing talent. As the recently departed Dominic Dunne (former Editor of Vanity Fair), said, "When you're with Liza Minnelli, you know you are with Hollywood Royalty". "Liza With A Z" was a "made for television" show and done early on in her career. I saw it when initially aired on NBC Network Sunday September 10, 9 PM Eastern, 8 PM Central time and still have an original large size official Poster of that event! "Liza With A Z" is a classic, and will increase in this regard only more so as the years go by. "Liza With A Z" is destined to become one of the greatest concerts ever presented on the medium of television. I am as awed by it today, as I was then, and actually can still hum and sing along with the songs!

Vincent Minnelli and Judy Garland, Liza's parents can (and I know are) proud of their daughter who has so successfully shown the world the talent that is within her, and in so doing has become a great singer/actress/human being that makes one feel good by simply being in her presence or hearing her sing, dance, act or just be interviewed. Like her mother, Judy Garland, Liza's personality is delightful and appealing. One is drawn like a magnet to these two personifications of talent, beauty, and simply being very well liked and loved human beings. I wish this could be said about all human beings and especially entertainers, but sadly it can only be said for a few, and both Judy and Liza are among those few!

Liza (like her mother, Judy Garland) is an automatic "feel good". No psychic energy sucker here, but rather a warm, entertaining human being with an obvious heart of gold, that gives one hell of a concert performance in this very well executed DVD. Even the case (which holds 2 DVD's) is glitzy and showy made from the best materials with good photography and artistic renderings from the original posters and other material related to the making of "Liza With A Z".

By the way, this is a great DVD, with all sorts of extras and footage that was cut out from the original Television show, because of time restraints. This DVD has so many different commentaries and segments they are too numerous to mention here, but I will tell you that even comments made by Liza's childhood friend from Beverly Hills, California, Mia Farrow are on this double DVD set of "Liza with a Z".

Liza Minnelli continues her performances today primarily in live Concerts around the World, as she is just now finishing up a wonderful two nights at the Historic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, the city of her birth and the home of her parents (Vincent Minnelli and Judy Garland), greatest accomplishments (not to forget Liza's first appearance on the big screen as a child) primarily through the medium of films produced at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios in Culver City, California.

May Liza long be with us........and boy do we need this type of Entertainer today!
