Plot: The strange mask that gave Jim Carrey remarkable powers in the 1994 hit The Mask makes a mess of a seemingly ordinary family in this special effects-laden comic fantasy. Tim Avery (Jamie Kennedy) is a cartoonist living quietly in suburbia with his wife Tonya (Traylor Howard), their baby son Alvey (Ryan Falconer), and dog Otis; however, their lives are turned upside down when Otis discovers a strange green mask which channels the spirit of Loki (Alan Cumming), the Norse god of mischief. Both Otis and Alvey get their hands (or paws) on the mask, and soon both are shape shifting and making all manner of trouble while having a great time doing it. Unfortunately, this isn't the end of Tim and Tonya's troubles -- it seems the supreme Norse god Odin (Bob Hoskins) has given Loki the assignment of recovering the mask, and Loki will do whatever he must to get the mask back from Alvey and Otis. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

My son ordered his first DVD with his allowance money. I won't say it's the greatest movie, but it was in perfect condition, came very quickly. Very impressed with Mars used stuff...

My grandson loves it

My three year old grandson saw this movie on TV and my daughter said he laughed all the way through it and wanted me to see if it was going to be on again soon so I could record it with my DVD recorder. When I could not find it in the TV listings I thought "Amazon usually has access to inexpensive movies" so I got on line and had the movie in just a few days. Now Riley watches the movies at least twice a week and still laughs at that baby.

I suspect this DVD, even though sealed in the case, was burned onto disk. It does not work, and there is a handwritten number on the CD.

Probably the only movie I'd give negative stars.

My main quarrel with this cinematic abortion is the original comics. Shame that so few people will know what I mean. They were filled with wall-to-wall violence, macabre, and deliciously tounge-in-cheek insanity. The Mask was ruthless, dark, yet still had that sardonic comical wit in the most extreme of situations. Most of all, the stories of the wearers were involving (at least as long as Arcudi and Mahnke were on board.) The first movie was a departure, but worked very well in its own way.

Maybe some people don't care, but that's what made this movie an insult. So far detatched from any of the grit of the comics or the playful yet mature attitude of the Jim Carrey endeavor. Even though New Line and Dark Horse appear on the credits for production/distribution, this thing should be considered infringement. It has no right to be associated with either rightful Mask franchise.

Jamie Kennedy was great in the Scream movies, but his donning of The Mask is painful, complete with plastic red hair. A baby with the Mask's powers is abhorrent on all levels. But why stop there? Throw in a sappy, by-the-numbers father-son acceptance subplot between Loki and Odin for good measure. And how about a car that looks like it was designed by the Roger Rabbit animators on ketamine? Oh, by the way, most of the movie revolves around the superpowered baby, Kennedy's character dealing with it as a stay-at-home dad, as well as its outlandish scuffles with the family dog.

The budget was listed around $100 million when it first came out, $74 million nowadays. With that money, you think they could've instead hired more a more suitable cast, a scribe that wasn't a noname children's cartoon staff writer, and a director other than the helmer of "Cats and Dogs." Nothing works here. The great Alan Cumming does his best with what he has. Unfortunately, his efforts to salvage this pile are a bust and the concept was ultimately doomed.

PROTIP: If you want to take a Mask movie in the same Tex Avery direction as the Jim Carrey flick, then either get Jim Carrey or change the direction completely. But Jim Carrey refuses to do sequels, so there.

I think this is a really good movie! I love it for what it is, and think it's a good new direction, instead of going back to Stanley Ipkiss. Ten years after the original, we meet Tim Avery and his sexy wife, Tonya. (Jamie kennedy does an awesome job as Tim. He's always hilarious!) Their dog, Otis finds the mask and brings it to him. At a HALLOWEEN party, Tim puts the mask on, and becomes just as zany as Stanley had. After the party, he goes home and makes sweet love to his wife with the mask on. Nine months later, little Alvey is born and has the powers of the mask. Loki, the god of mischief is looking for the mask and the baby. When Tonya leaves town, Tim has to care for Alvey, but Alvey is trying to drive him crazy. Finally, Alvey begins to like his dad. Loki finds both the mask and Alvey and holds Alvey hostage. Tim needs the mask to help stop Loki. Tonya comes back and doesn't believe whats happening. Tim and Loki use their powers to stop each other. When it comes to making Alvey pick who he wants to go with, Tim doesn't need the mask to show how much he loves him. If you love comedy, and the original, you might like SON OF THE MASK!!!!
