Plot: One of the landmark screwball comedies of the 1930s, My Man Godfrey offers the radiant Carole Lombard in her definitive performance as flighty young heiress Irene Bullock, who on a society scavenger hunt stumbles on Godfrey (William Powell), an erudite hobo residing in the city dump. Godfrey becomes the family's butler, much to the dismay of Irene's father Alexander (Eugene Pallette), who thinks his household is crazy enough without another apparent lunatic under his roof. Halfway through the film, we discover that Godfrey isn't a penniless bum at all, but the scion of a wealthy Boston family. Having been burned by an unhappy romance, Godfrey dropped out of life, taking up residence in the dump. Here his faith in humanity was restored by his fellow indigents, who managed to survive and remain optimistic despite the worst deprivations. Meanwhile, however, he wants to straighten out the Bullock family, who he feels are a basically decent bunch beneath all their pretensions and eccentricities -- and along the way, of course, Irene determines that Godfrey will be her husband. While Godfrey's ultimate solution to the exigencies of the Depression seems more of a placebo, My Man Godfrey is all in all a totally satisfying jolt of 1930s-style wish fulfillment. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

My Man Godfrey - Color vs Black & White
Added 11/12/2009

The B&W version I bought from Amazon.com was fine - good drama comedy. However, was disappointed in the color I bought from you next as there were glitches in the colorized version and also missing parts in this version. Maybe the next "color batch run" version will be better. If so, I'd like to trade in the last one I bought.

A must own screwball comedy for your collection

As a 30 year old person, I was always skeptical about getting into watching the classics. Then one day after tooling around on IMDB, I noticed that there was a Top 250 according to users. I have seen alot of movies. My collection of DVDs is over 1500 and counting but nothing was prior to 1970 so I decided as a self proclaimed "Movie Buff" that I could not continue on without seeing these Top 250.

My Man Godfrey is one of those movies that once you see it, you are aware of how much influence it has had on cinema since. Both in the theme of the film and the way that it is made. The theme is simple and elegant: The Rich are completely out of touch not only with reality but also with their own lives. They are too wrapped up in the image that they must maintain in order to stay in the inner circle and away from "The Lost Man". Shot in a way that makes in a drama as much as a comedy, this movie sheads a light on an important subject matter of the time, The Great Depression.

I don't want to write another summary of the movie and give away the ending so all I will say is that if you love movies, especially ones that are socially important with relevant and period subject matter than MY MAN GODFREY is a movie that you have to own and watch. I have watched it 5 times since I bought it several months ago.

The best "Godfrey" I've seen yet!

We all know the movie. Cute, funny, a comic morality play. But, the most important thing is the quality. This is the best version of both the color, and black & white that I've ever seen. A must have for that reason alone. And besides, it's a great movie!
