Plot: Sean Penn graduated to full stardom with the 1984 drama Racing with the Moon, even though the film itself hardly set new box office records. Set in the early years of World War II, the film stars Penn as a small-town teen-aged hotshot, six weeks away from being shipped out to fight overseas. In the meantime, Penn begins to date Elizabeth McGovern, whom he assumes is from a wealthy family. Penn's pal Nicolas Cage, who's gotten his girlfriend Suzanne Adkinson pregnant, imposes upon Penn to hit up McGovern for the abortion money. That's when Penn discovers that the girl barely has a penny to her name. Convinced that Penn cared for her only when he thought she was rich, McGovern walks out on him, but later teams up with Penn to help the unfortunate Adkinson. The plot is pure James Dean, a fact not lost on fans who regarded Sean Penn as the second coming of Dean. A very slight piece, Racing With the Moon is buoyed by the engaging performances of the stars, and by director Richard Benjamin's meticulous attention to period detail-especially in those peerless bowling-alley and skating-rink sequences. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I have become a Nicolas Cage fan later in his movie career. I am so glad that I bought this movie. The story is sad and tragic, but done so well. Sean Penn, Elizabeth McGovern and Nicolas Cage are fantastic in this movie.

It is Christmas 1942, and America has instituted the draft of young men to enter the War.It is six weeks to shipping out, and Henry Nash and his best friend Nicky, average middle class teens, with delusions of grandeur about being Marines (from seeing too many News Reels!)live out their remaining time in a coastal California town.Nicky (Nicholas Cage )and Henry (Sean Penn) work in a bowling alley as pin boys. Both are typical teens with active libidos.Nicky is the wilder one, but Henry has a sensible and sensitive side that Sean Penn shows that is the excelling point of this somewhat drawn out 108 minute period piece.Watching this film for the first time since 25 years ago, I was struck with what a mature actor Penn was at the time. He, as Henry,is the true star of this film. His acting is beyond his years and his ability to communicate deep emotion and sensitivity is something that for years to come we would not see.Henry falls for Callie,(Elizabeth McGovern in her usual dull performance)) whom he mistakenly thinks is a "Gatsby girl"-a rich privileged girl. She is not, though.Their relationship is quiet and unassuming and is treated with much respect (despite the raciness of the nudity in 1984!).Henry is a gentleman, and Penn is utterly convincing in his part.Cage, also before his time of greatness (and not-so-greatness!) plays beautifully the insensitive and dangerously carefree yet naive Nicky. There is one very poignant scene which involves an abortion that is particularly adroit. The film, though, as a whole is rather lazy and does not build, but maintains a steady and somewhat dull pace. The DVD is really no better print-wise than the VHS tape, though it is widescreen.Recommended only for seeing two actors in their younger days.

It's really kind of sad how great movies such as this one get put on the "backburner". I have seen all of the movies of Sean Penn and Nicholas Cage, and this is by far the best movie that they have ever acted in. Elizabeth Mcgovern is perfect as Sean Penn's love interest and she plays her part beautifully. This is a feel good movie, you can't watch this movie without reaching out to the past and wishing that we were living in a world that was more innocent and simple. The story line of this movie will tug at your heart strings. The music is beautiful and the scenary is inspirational. This great movie is definitely worth your time and money. You will be transported to a time when "we americans" knew our roots and how to nourish them. Enjoy!
